"It is not easy for Chinese companies to go global, but now is a good opportunity for Chinese pharmaceutical companies to set sail overseas." Recently, Leon Wang, Executive Vice President of AstraZeneca Global, President of International Business and China, stated at a conference that AstraZeneca will leverage its innovative advantages to support the overseas expansion and globalization of locally produced innovative drugs.

Wang Lei introduced that, in terms of R&D innovation, AstraZeneca's Global R&D China Center, located in Shanghai, adopts a model of both independent research and external collaboration. By leveraging China’s strengths in artificial intelligence, big data, and other fields, the center is committed to accelerating the introduction of global innovative drugs into China. In terms of commercial innovation, AstraZeneca has built an "innovation ecosystem" driven by three key components: the China Smart Health Innovation Center, the AstraZeneca CICC Healthcare Industry Fund, and the International Life Science Innovation Park. The goal is to achieve the perfect integration of Eastern and Western resources, supporting the "import" and "export" of innovative drugs. Regarding "going global," AstraZeneca is willing to share its strengths with China's innovative enterprises.

Wang Lei suggested that, based on the company's own situation, the overseas expansion of innovative drugs can be divided into several directions: those with good drug quality and capital support can directly compete in the European and American markets; those with good drug quality but temporarily lacking capital support can go to developing countries; those focusing on generic drugs, if they can compete with India in terms of high quality and low price, will be needed not only by developing countries but also by developed countries; for companies that only focus on the domestic market, if the drug is particularly good, there are still opportunities.

In terms of "bringing in," Wang Lei stated that in the past, AstraZeneca's focus was primarily on introducing innovative Western medicines to China. However, now we believe that combining Eastern and Western strengths is key to achieving successful innovation. AstraZeneca can both mobilize scientists in developed Western countries to research and develop drugs for introduction into China to benefit the Chinese people, and also work closely with Chinese scientists to promote domestically innovated medicines globally for the benefit of humanity.
