On September 28, 2023, the team of Professor Chen Youxin from the Department of Ophthalmology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital successfully completed the first dosing of AAV gene drug AL-001 for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD) in China.This is the first AAV gene therapy drug in China administered through suprachoroidal space injection (SCS), marking a milestone in the treatment of wAMD. The injection was personally performed by Professor Chen Youxin, the principal investigator from Peking Union Medical College Hospital, which leads the project. The SCS injection was successfully carried out, and the participant showed good ocular and systemic conditions post-operation.
Professor Chen Youxin stated: "I am very pleased to implement the first case in China of injecting an AAV gene drug through the suprachoroidal route for the treatment of wAMD subjects. Compared with intravitreal injection and subretinal injection of AAV gene drugs, suprachoroidal injection is safer and easier to perform, and can be carried out under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. I look forward to this minimally invasive method of administration benefiting patients."
"AL-001 Ophthalmic Injection" is a Class 1 biological new drug developed by Anlong, a China-based company. It is the first gene therapy drug in China for the treatment of wAMD administered through suprachoroidal injection. The drug enables long-term sustained expression of the aflibercept protein within the eye, inhibiting the formation of new blood vessels to achieve prolonged treatment of wAMD.
