Amgen Completes $27.8 Billion Acquisition of Horizon Therapeutics Amid FTC Scrutiny

From the announcement of the acquisition agreement at the end of 2022, this merger took 10 months to complete. In May 2023, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) took Amgen to court in an effort to block Amgen's acquisition of Horizon. The FTC argued that Amgen might use its existing product portfolio to consolidate Horizon's monopoly position in treatments for Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) and Chronic Refractory Gout (CRG).
