According to a report by "New Drug Agency" on October 7, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced that Luo Yan, former Director of the Western Region of GSK's Respiratory Business Unit, has been promoted to the National Sales Head of GSK’s Respiratory Business Unit, effective October 1, 2023. Luo Yan will be based in Shanghai and report to Yu Jin Yi, the interim head of the Respiratory Business Unit.
The announcement shows that Luo Yan has worked at GSK for nearly 20 years, starting as a frontline representative in the respiratory and anti-infective product line, and subsequently serving as regional marketing manager, area manager, regional director, and Western Region Director. She has consistently focused on the respiratory field, leading her team to deliver high performance while promoting the development of regional personnel.
Multiple Personnel Changes This Year
Prior to this, GSK China also underwent personnel adjustments.
On January 3 this year, Xu Ding stepped down as Vice President of GSK China and Head of the Respiratory Business. Yu Jinyi joined GSK China on January 4 and assumed the position of Vice President and Head of the Respiratory Business. Meanwhile, GSK China also announced that Nigel Huscroft, Head of Product Planning, had completed his term in China, and Ji Cheng, Head of Strategy and Operations, would temporarily take over as Head of Product Planning.
On September 8, Yu Jinyi was appointed as Vice President and Head of Specialty Medicines, effective from September 11. After this adjustment, Yu Jinyi will continue to serve as the head of the Respiratory business until a successor is officially announced. Yu Jinyi will accelerate the growth of GSK's core product in the specialty medicines field, Benlysta (belimumab), and prepare for the launch of Nucala (mepolizumab) for SEA indications.
Yu Jinyi holds a degree in Pharmacy from Guangdong Pharmaceutical University and an MBA from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. He worked at Novartis for many years as the national sales and market access strategy lead for Cosentyx. On June 15, 2020, Yu Jinyi joined Gilead Sciences as the Senior National Sales Director for the hepatitis team. On April 19, 2021, Yu Jinyi joined Sanofi Pasteur China as the Chief Business Officer. On December 23, 2022, Yu Jinyi left Sanofi.
H1 Performance Released, R&D Strategy Adjusted
On July 26, GSK announced its Q2 2023 performance, with total revenue reaching £7.2 billion, a year-on-year increase of 4%. Among this, vaccine sector revenue was £2 billion, up 18% year-on-year; general medicines revenue was £2.6 billion, increasing by 8% year-on-year; specialty medicines revenue was £2.5 billion, down 7% year-on-year.
In the vaccine field, the sales of Shingrix, a herpes zoster vaccine, reached 880 million pounds, increasing by 20% year-on-year; in the specialty medicine field, Dolutegravir-related products contributed the highest sales, reaching 1.325 billion pounds; in the general medicine field, Trelegy Ellipta, Seretide/Advair, Relvar/Breo Ellipta and other products all showed good market performance.
Overall Performance in the First Half of the Year: GSK's total revenue reached £14.129 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 2%. Of this, specialty drug revenue was £4.759 billion, a year-on-year increase of 21%; vaccine revenue was £4.063 billion, a year-on-year increase of 16%; and general medicine revenue was £5.307 billion, a year-on-year increase of 8%.
In terms of new drug approvals, Arexvy was approved by the FDA in May for the prevention of lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in individuals aged 60 and above. This is the world's first RSV vaccine approved for use in the elderly. Regarding this, GSK CEO Emma Walmsley stated, "The approval of Arexvy is an important milestone and a representative product of GSK's next wave of vaccine innovation."
In addition, GSK completed a significant acquisition in the first half of the year. On April 18 this year, GSK announced the acquisition of Bellus Health for $2 billion, thereby obtaining camlipixant, a P2X3 receptor antagonist used to treat chronic cough, which will expand its respiratory pipeline.
As of now, GSK has a total of 68 vaccines and drugs in development, with 17 products in Phase 3 clinical trials or the registration stage. According to Fierce Biotech, GSK is restructuring its R&D team by splitting its R&D department into three independent teams, each focusing on Respiratory & Immunology, Vaccines & Infectious Diseases, and Oncology research, to enhance the efficiency of late-stage clinical development. A GSK spokesperson stated that as R&D investment increases, the company’s top priority is to accelerate the delivery of its product pipeline.
