【Pharmaceutical Network Pharmaceutical Engineering】With the aggravation of population aging, the continuous upgrading of consumption levels, and the support of favorable policies, China is accelerating its position as an important source of global pharmaceutical innovation. Not only are domestic pharmaceutical companies actively deploying, but multinational pharmaceutical enterprises also have a positive outlook on China's pharmaceutical market and continue to make diversified and in-depth arrangements.

It is reported that the 4th Qingdao Summit for Leaders of Multinational Corporations will be held in Qingdao, Shandong, from October 12th to 14th. AstraZeneca, a global biopharmaceutical company, will attend the summit. During the summit, AstraZeneca's Qingdao regional headquarters will officially commence operations and hold an unveiling ceremony.

Qingdao Regional Headquarters will further integrate AstraZeneca's resources in the medical industry with the geographical advantages of Qingdao, Shandong, and comprehensively promote cooperation in drug production and supply, circulation and trade, innovation ecosystem, and research and development. At the same time, it will also support Qingdao City in building a comprehensive prevention and treatment system and management model for COPD, contributing to the early realization of the Healthy China 2030 goals.

It is reported that since AstraZeneca officially entered the Chinese market for development in 1993, its performance in China has continued to grow. In 2022, revenue reached 5.792 billion US dollars. Currently, the company has nearly 40 innovative drugs approved and launched in China, and it is expected that 80 new drugs and new indications will be approved in China within the next five years. In recent years, in response to the normalization of centralized procurement and dynamic adjustments to medical insurance, AstraZeneca has actively adjusted its business layout in China, splitting and merging multiple business units, dividing operations into four main divisions: Oncology; Respiratory, Digestive, and Autoimmune Diseases; Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolic Diseases; and Rare Diseases. Additionally, since 2019, AstraZeneca has established six regional headquarters in China, located in Beijing, Guangzhou, Wuxi, Hangzhou, Chengdu, and Qingdao.

Among them, Qingdao is an important coastal city in China with certain advantages. AstraZeneca has been continuously promoting the signing and implementation of major projects in Qingdao. Since 2023, in addition to the official launch of its regional headquarters in Qingdao, AstraZeneca has also made multiple investment arrangements in the city.

For example, in March this year, AstraZeneca officially signed an investment cooperation agreement with Qingdao High-tech Zone to build a new production and supply base for inhalation aerosols in the High-tech Zone. The total investment of the project is approximately 450 million US dollars.

On August 14, AstraZeneca announced an additional investment of $250 million in the Qingdao inhalation aerosol production and supply base project, adding to the previous total investment of $450 million. This brings the planned investment to $700 million, further establishing the Qingdao facility as a key component of AstraZeneca's global pharmaceutical supply chain.

In addition, AstraZeneca has deepened cooperation with Qingdao High-tech Zone in areas such as innovation centers, innovation parks, and industrial funds. By linking up partners from industry, academia, research, medicine, and investment, it aims to build a regional health innovation ecosystem, accumulating momentum and energy for the development of Qingdao's life and health industry.

AstraZeneca's continuous layout in Qingdao demonstrates the strong attraction of Qingdao High-tech Zone to foreign investment. This is also a microcosm of multinational pharmaceutical companies' confidence in the Chinese market.

In addition to AstraZeneca, many multinational pharmaceutical companies have also increased their investments in China this year. For example, on October 9, Boston Scientific announced that it would establish its first production and manufacturing base in China in Shanghai. On the same day, the signing ceremony for the Boston Scientific Medical Technology Industrial Base project was held. In September 2023, Merck registered a subsidiary in the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone to better participate in the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port and deepen its presence in the Chinese market. On September 5, Bayer's Prescription Drug Beijing Supply Center held an inauguration ceremony for its imaging diagnostics medical device plant in the Economic Development Zone, indicating that Bayer’s imaging diagnostic equipment will soon be locally produced in China.
