Medtronic to Showcase Eight Premiering Innovations at the 6th CIIE Under the Theme 'Elevating Life Through Technology'

ShanghaiOctober 15, 2023PR Newswire -- With 20 days to go before the Sixth China International Import Expo (hereinafter referred to as "CIIE"), Medtronic, as the vice chairman unit of the CIIE Medical Device Professional Committee, will showcase over 60 innovative exhibits under the theme "Life Transformed by Technology" on the CIIE stage. These exhibits include one global premiere, one Asia-Pacific premiere, and six China premieres. Additionally, Medtronic will release its AI-driven orthopedic and neurosurgical ecosystem for the first time at the CIIE, comprehensively demonstrating the revolutionary results of Medtronic's technological innovation in the medical field.

As a "long-time friend" of the CIIE, Medtronic has deeply participated in each session of the event, cumulatively showcasing nearly 300 innovative products and therapies, including nearly 50 products and technologies displayed for the first time. Leveraging the strong influence and spillover effects of the CIIE platform, Medtronic has accelerated its transformation from product imports to localized manufacturing, and further to the comprehensive establishment of a localized value chain, while also promoting the overall development of China's domestic medical technology industry.

Year after year, the latest innovative exhibits from around the world make their debut in succession.

This year, Medtronic will unveil eight innovative products and technologies from different therapeutic areas for the first time at the CIIE. Among them, the globally premiering product, PulseSelect™ Pulsed Field Ablation System, represents cutting-edge ablation technology in the field of electrophysiology. It is also the first cardiac pulsed field ablation product to enter the National Medical Products Administration’s special approval channel for innovative medical devices. After approval, Medtronic will become the first provider in China to offer a comprehensive cardiac electrophysiology solution with all three types of ablation energy: "cryo, heat, and electric." Additionally, Medtronic's next-generation ClosureFast Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation Catheter will be exhibited for the first time in the Asia-Pacific region. Compared to the previous generation, the fully upgraded ClosureFast will significantly enhance surgical efficiency and treatment experience, offering a new treatment option for nearly 100 million potential varicose vein patients in China.

In addition, Medtronic has brought six products for their China debut. Among them, five are from the cardiac and vascular fields, including what is known as "the world's smallest pacemaker."^[i]The upgraded versions—Micra™ VR 2 & Micra™ AV 2—can extend battery life to nearly 17 years. The Heli-FX™ EndoAnchor™ System, the world's first FDA-approved solution for short-neck infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms, is designed to secure and seal endovascular aortic stent grafts to the native artery, significantly reducing the risk of endoleaks or other complications during surgery. The Concerto Detachable Coil is suitable for peripheral arterial and venous embolization, offering excellent vessel conformity, shaping ability, and fast, reliable delivery and detachment during procedures. The SimuForm™ Semi-Rigid Annuloplasty Ring is used in cardiac surgery for mitral valve repair, reducing the incidence of systolic anterior motion post-surgery while greatly improving procedural safety. The Attain Stability™ Quad MRI SureScan™ 4798 implantable left ventricular pacing lead enhances precision during pacemaker implantation and reduces the risk of lead dislodgement. Additionally, Medtronic’s PillCam Patency Capsule will make its debut as an ingestible, dissolvable, non-video capsule that provides clinicians with valuable information before performing capsule endoscopy.

From Accelerated Introduction to Local Value Chain Construction, Spillover EffectFull Overlay Release

Currently, Medtronic has successfully transformed 10 innovative products and therapies from "exhibits to commodities," accelerating service to local patients in China. For example, in the cardiac and vascular fields, Medtronic's MyCareLink™, a data transmitter for implantable cardiac electronic devices specifically designed for Chinese users, has benefited more than 3,000 cardiac patients through the "Remote Follow-up Project for Cardiac Electronic Device Implant Patients Community" since its debut at the CIIE in 2019. Another innovative exhibit in the cardiac field, the Percepta™ CRTP MRI SureScan™ implantable cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemaker, was first exhibited at the CIIE in 2022 and gained approval from the National Medical Products Administration as the first cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemaker with Bluetooth communication capability within just half a year, enabling real-time condition management for doctors and patients.

Moreover, the Symplicity Spyral* Renal Denervation System and catheter have been exhibited at the CIIE for three consecutive years starting from 2020. They are currently undergoing pilot trials in the Boao Pilot Zone, benefiting more than 50 Chinese patients with hypertension. In the field of neurosurgery, two products first showcased at the 4th CIIE achieved significant progress in July this year: one is the official launch of the Stealth Autoguide™ Neurosurgical Robotic System in China; the other is the Percept PC™, which has successfully completed the first batch of implant surgeries in China. The Percept PC™ is a cutting-edge intelligent brain pacemaker capable of sensing, marking a new era of precise treatment for brain pacemaker therapy, moving beyond the previous "blind" approach.

Riding the momentum of CIIE, Medtronic continues to solidify its local value chain layout in China, laying a strong foundation for serving Chinese patients. Taking Medtronic's orthopedic business in China as an example, the Mazor X spinal surgery navigation and positioning system made its debut at the third CIIE. Just one year later, it was approved for marketing and put into clinical use. To better meet local demands in China, Medtronic has accelerated the localization of its robotic technology. A production line for robots has been established at the Kanghui Changzhou Science and Technology Park. In April 2023, the engineering prototype of the Chinese version of Mazor—Mazor™ XC—rolled off the production line. Meanwhile, in the first half of the year, Medtronic officially launched the "AiBLE Digital Intelligence Orthopedics/Neurosurgery Innovation Ecosystem," which will lead the industry into a new era of full-course digital management. Within just three years, Medtronic completed the transition from product importation to localized manufacturing and then initiated the construction of a local ecosystem, contributing to the overall enhancement of China’s medical technology innovation industry chain.
