ShanghaiOctober 25, 2023PR Newswire -- The 6th China International Import Expo (hereinafter referred to as "CIIE") is about to open. As a "regular participant" of CIIE, Medtronic, a global medical technology company, has participated in the event for consecutive years and benefited from its strong influence and spillover effects, with more than 10 innovative products accelerating their launch in China. From global introduction to the upgrade of local R&D and manufacturing, the pace of localization continues to accelerate, reflecting Medtronic's firm confidence in deepening its presence in the Chinese market.

Medtronic Global Senior Vice President and Greater China President Gu Yushao stated"The CIIE is an important platform for multinational enterprises to share development opportunities. Relying on the spillover benefits of the CIIE, over the years, many of Medtronic's global innovative exhibits have accelerated their entry into the Chinese market, and the company’s local value chain construction has been continuously advancing and improving. This year marks the sixth year of Medtronic’s partnership with the CIIE, and we hope to ride the CIIE 'express train' to bring more innovative medical technologies to Chinese patients and healthcare providers. At the same time, we look forward to collaborating with more partners to jointly promote the high-quality development of China’s healthcare industry and contribute to 'Healthy China.'"

More Than Ten CIIE Exhibits Turn into Products, Accelerating the Landing of Global Innovations in China

The CIIE is an important stage for gathering global innovative technologies. Over the past five years of participating in the CIIE, Medtronic has showcased more than 50 products for the first time, with over 10 innovative products accelerating from exhibits to commercially available goods, serving more patients and healthcare providers in China.

In the cardiac field, the "world's smallest pacemaker" Micra VR and Micra AV transcatheter leadless pacemaker systems have shone brightly at the CIIE for five consecutive years.[1]Since its launch in China, it has benefited approximately 10,000 Chinese patients with bradycardia. Another star exhibit that appeared at the same time during the 4th CIIE was Medtronic's 3rd generation TAVR product—the CoreValve Evolut PRO Transcatheter Aortic Valve System—which the media has hailed as "the pioneer of self-expanding heart valves."[2], which was successfully approved just months after its debut, has now been implemented in surgeries at more than 90 medical institutions across 25 provinces in China.

In other fields, Medtronic has multiple star exhibits that are accelerating their landing in China with the help of the CIIE platform. The star exhibit Symplicity Spyral Renal Denervation System and Catheter*, which has been exhibited at the CIIE for three consecutive years since 2020, has benefited more than 50 Chinese patients with hypertension through early access in Hainan Boao Healthcare Pilot Zone and real-world studies conducted in China. The Percept™ PC Deep Brain Stimulation System, which entered public view at the 4th CIIE, completed the first batch of implant surgeries in China this July, bringing new treatment options to Chinese patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, dystonia, tremors, and epilepsy.

At the CIIE, the innovative products have garnered attention, but the intelligent "black tech" exhibits are even more attractive. At each edition of the CIIE, Medtronic has showcased several cutting-edge intelligent innovations from around the globe. Today, these exhibits have moved from the CIIE to reach healthcare providers and patients across China, supporting the digital and intelligent upgrade of China's healthcare system.

Stealth Autoguide™, a cranial surgery positioning device that made its debut at the 4th CIIE, garnered significant attention for its submillimeter precision in positioning and guidance. In July this year, the product officially launched in the Chinese market. Concurrently, Medtronic unveiled the "AiBLE Digital Orthopedics/Neurosurgery Innovation Ecosystem," which organically integrates Medtronic's globally leading implants, surgical robots, surgical navigation systems, and surgical power systems, along with products and technologies from external partners. This synergy aims to lead the industry into a new era of digital and intelligent full-course disease management, fostering an open and mutually beneficial innovation ecosystem.

Another Medtronic digital innovation exhibit, the Percepta™ Implantable Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Pacemaker, was approved for market entry just months after its debut at the 5th CIIE, becoming the first cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemaker with Bluetooth communication functionality approved by the National Medical Products Administration, enabling "zero time difference" condition management for doctors and patients. Additionally, the MyCareLink™ Implantable Cardiac Device Monitor, specifically designed for Chinese users and first showcased at the 2nd CIIE, has now benefited over 3,000 cardiac disease patients through the "Remote Follow-up Project for Patients with Implanted Cardiac Electronic Devices Community." Signia Intelligent Stapling SystemTMStapling System Electric Stapler Handle and Accessories, which detect tissue thickness through intelligent adaptive stapling technology, assisting surgeons in achieving personalized surgical plans based on tissue differences with intelligent control.

Medtronic Continues to Accelerate the Promotion of Digital Innovation, Truly Linking Exhibits to Clinical Applications. The Hugo RAS Robot-Assisted Surgical System, which gained significant attention at the 5th CIIE, has now established the Show Chwan IRCAD-Taiwan Hugo Medtronic Robot-Assisted Surgical Training Center in Changhua County, Taiwan Province, China. As the first training center in Greater China based on Medtronic’s Hugo RAS robot-assisted surgical system technology, this center will provide precise minimally invasive surgical training for surgeons across the Asia-Pacific region and locally, with the aim of enhancing the overall application level of clinical surgical robots in China.

From Accelerated Introduction to Local Manufacturing and R&D Upgrade, the Power of CIIE Strengthens the Foundation of Localization

In the past five years, the CIIE has fully demonstrated its significant influence and spillover effects on innovative medical technology, strengthening Medtronic's confidence in deepening its commitment to China and accelerating its localized layout.

The star product Mazor X Stealth Edition spinal surgery navigation and positioning system, which has been exhibited at the CIIE for three consecutive years, was approved for marketing and put into clinical application just one year after its debut, thanks to the "acceleration" of the CIIE. Meanwhile, in order to better meet the needs of doctors and patients in China, Medtronic is accelerating the localization of its robotic systems. A robotic production line is being set up at the Medtronic Kanghui Changzhou Science and Technology Park. In April this year, the engineering prototype of the Chinese version of Mazor—Mazor™ XC—rolled off the production line, and the product is expected to be launched within two years.

To further unleash the localized demand in China's medical market and better serve Chinese patients and doctors, Medtronic has frequently implemented localization initiatives in recent years. This year, Medtronic launched its first locally produced intraoperative neuro-monitoring device, the NIM Essence.TMApproved in China. With NIM EssenceTMWith the launch, intraoperative neuromonitoring therapy will be able to cover more regions in China, and it is expected to reach over 50 hospitals nationwide by the end of this year, bringing convenience to both patients and clinicians. In August this year, the first localized product from a foreign brand in China's neurointervention field – Medtronic’s MedArray™ mechanically detachable coil – officially entered the market. By the end of August, the first clinical implantation was successfully completed, providing clinicians with a safer, more effective, and diverse embolization treatment option. Additionally, based on the needs of Chinese clinicians and patients, Medtronic China initiated the localization project for its respiratory monitoring product (RespArray™ Patient Monitor) in 2022. Within just one year, the product development and testing were completed and submitted to the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) for approval. It is expected to complete its localized market launch in China by 2024.
