Intelligent Finance and Economics News learned that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK.US) stated that its vaccine targeting the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) showed positive preliminary results in a late-stage trial. The vaccine can protect adults aged 50 to 59 from this virus, which causes thousands of hospitalizations and deaths each year. The British pharmaceutical company announced on Wednesday that the vaccine, named Arexvy, achieved the primary goal of the Phase III trial by eliciting an immune response in the reported age group. Participants in this age group are at increased risk of contracting the virus due to certain underlying medical conditions.

RSV usually causes symptoms similar to a cold, but it is also a leading cause of pneumonia in young children and the elderly. This vaccine has been approved in the United States, Europe, Japan, and other countries for protecting adults aged 60 and above.
