This time, Foshan Chancheng Hospital joined hands with two international pharmaceutical and device giants to introduce the Symplicity Spyral™ Renal Denervation System and the FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation System for atrial fibrillation into mainland China for the first time. These two internationally innovative medical devices are scheduled to "arrive" at Foshan Chancheng Hospital in mid-to-late November for their first implant surgeries. Atrial Fibrillation Treatment Enters a New Era of "Electric Field Ablation"

Atrial fibrillation is a common type of arrhythmia. If left untreated for a long time, it can easily lead to stroke and heart failure, causing serious consequences. Currently, treatments for atrial fibrillation include both medication and surgical options. This time, Foshan Chan Hospital and Boston Scientific have introduced the FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation, the world's first pulsed field treatment technology specifically for atrial fibrillation. This technology rapidly applies high-voltage electrical pulses to cell membranes, causing irreversible penetrative damage to the cell membrane, disrupting the homeostasis of the intracellular environment, and ultimately leading to apoptosis, achieving the purpose of non-thermal ablation.

Compared with traditional radiofrequency and cryoablation, pulsed electric field ablation technology has high tissue selectivity, which can ensure the ablation effect while preventing damage to the adjacent tissues of the target ablation area. It is a relatively safe and efficient ablation method.

As a "rising star" in the field of atrial fibrillation ablation, the FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) system received the "Breakthrough Device Designation" from the U.S. FDA in 2019 and obtained EU CE certification in 2021. It is currently used for the treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PaAF) in Europe, with a cumulative total of 20,000 real-world practical cases globally.

Introduction of the World's First Interventional Therapy for Refractory Hypertension

Hypertension is the most common chronic disease and the leading risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Data shows that the number of people with hypertension in China is around 340 million, ranking first globally. Hypertension has traditionally been treated primarily with medication, but drug therapy has issues such as poor compliance and significant side effects. The emergence of renal denervation (RDN) via catheter offers the potential to address the limitations of drug treatment.

In order to bring more patients with hypertension a safer and more effective new treatment option internationally, Foshan Chancheng Hospital has joined hands with Medtronic, a Fortune 500 medical technology company, to take the lead in introducing and implementing the Symplicity Spyral™ Renal Denervation System in mainland China. This is the world’s first interventional therapy specifically targeting resistant hypertension. The Symplicity Spyral™ multi-electrode renal denervation system works by interrupting the transmission of nerve impulses between the central sympathetic nervous system and the kidneys, increasing renal blood flow, enhancing sodium and water excretion in urine, while reducing renin release from the kidneys, thereby achieving blood pressure control. Its catheter has received EU CE certification for market release and has accumulated over 20,000 surgical cases globally, making it the most extensively researched and clinically evidenced interventional device for treating hypertension.

At this year's CIIE, Chan Medical successfully partnered with two international pharmaceutical and medical device giants to introduce innovative drugs and technologies from abroad. This progress is based on the deep implementation of the "Hong Kong-Macao Medicine and Device Access Policy." According to reports, the "Work Plan for the Innovation and Development of Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Regulation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area" (referred to as the "Hong Kong-Macao Medicine and Device Access Policy") was officially introduced in 2020 under the authorization of the State Council. The policy states that medical institutions meeting specific conditions, as approved by the Guangdong Provincial People’s Government, can use urgently needed clinical medicines or medical devices that have already been marketed in Hong Kong and Macao. Since its implementation over the past two years, the policy has not only created a "fast track" for new drug approvals but also accelerated the approval and market entry of international innovative drugs and medical devices in China, promoting the interconnection of medical resources within the Greater Bay Area and providing higher quality and more advanced medical services to the residents of the region.

After obtaining the qualification as a designated medical institution for the second batch of the "Hong Kong-Macao Medicine and Device Connect" program in Guangdong Province in February this year, Foshan Chan Hospital has been working closely with health authorities and medical enterprises.Five international innovative drugs and medical devices have successively passed the approval, ranking first among the second batch of medical institutions in terms of the number of approved drugs and medical devices and service volume.
