【Pharmaceutical Network Industry DynamicsNovember 4th, news came that at the 15th Academic Annual Meeting of the Chinese Society for Biotechnology Engineering and the 2023 China Biotechnology Conference, the "China Bio-pharmaceutical Industry Development Index CBIB2023" (hereinafter referred to as CBIB2023) announced the evaluation results of regional bio-pharmaceutical industries, including a list of 20 key industrial parks.
From the list of nominees, the 20 key industrial parks that made the cut are: Beijing Yizhuang Biomedical Park, Chengdu Medical City, Guangzhou International Bio Island, Guangzhou Science City, Haikou National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone Pharmaceutical Valley, Hangzhou Medicine Port, Jiangsu Medical Device Technology Park, Liangjiang New Area Shuitu High-tech Industrial Park, Nanjing Life Science and Technology Town, Nanjing Biopharmaceutical Valley, Shanghai International Medical Park, Shenzhen National Bio-industrial Base, Shijiazhuang International Biopharmaceutical Park, Suzhou Biopharmaceutical Park, Wuhan National Biological Industry Base (Optics Valley Bio-city), Xiamen Biomedical Port, Zhangjiang Biopharmaceutical Base, Zhongguancun Science Park Daxing Biomedical Industry Base, Zhongguancun Life Science Park, and Zhongshan National Health Technology Industrial Base.
From the perspective of these 20 key industrial parks, the regional concentration is quite evident. Four out of ten key parks are located in East China. Among them, Jiangsu and Guangdong have the highest number of key parks, with four each; followed by Beijing and Shanghai, which have three and two key parks respectively. Zhejiang, Sichuan, Hebei, Chongqing, Hubei, Hainan, and Shenzhen each have one park selected.
The above 20 key industrial parks have become the core areas for the development of the biopharmaceutical industry and the gathering zones for industrial elements in various regions. For example, Hangzhou Medicine Port, as Zhejiang Province's first industrial functional zone integrating a new industrial platform covering thousands of mu and worth tens of billions, special towns, industrial innovation service complexes, and industrial innovation centers, has seen increasing levels of industrial concentration and influence. Currently, Hangzhou Medicine Port has attracted over 1,500 biopharmaceutical companies, with seven out of the world’s top ten pharmaceutical companies such as MSD, Abbott, and Johnson & Johnson settling here. It has also attracted 29 public service platforms, including the Institute of Basic Medicine and Cancer Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2021, biopharmaceutical companies in Hangzhou Medicine Port achieved revenue of 45 billion yuan, representing a year-on-year increase of 12%. The zone completed the signing and implementation of 35 projects worth over 100 million yuan, 11 projects worth over 1 billion yuan, with a total investment of 23.26 billion yuan.
Shanghai International Medical Park is an important part of the life and health industry in Zhangjiang Science City, focusing on "medical care" as its core. It promotes the integrated development of "five medical fields" – medical treatment, medical care and elderly support, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and medical sciences. The park has attracted over 1,000 industry institutions and companies to settle in, while forming a large-scale cluster for third-party medical testing services. Several innovative scientific and technological achievements have emerged, including Envada, the world’s first subcutaneously injectable PD-L1 antibody drug; Bimagrumab (Yishengtai), the world’s first GLP-1 class drug with an amino acid sequence completely identical to that of humans; and the world’s first multi-source static CT.
For instance, Guangzhou International Bio Island, as the core area of Guangzhou National Biotech Base, has introduced more than 30 academician-led projects, cumulatively nurtured or attracted 166 high-level talents, including 64 national-level talents and 5 provincial or ministerial-level talents. It has gathered over 500 biopharmaceutical enterprises, 8 Fortune Global 500 projects, 4 listed company headquarters, 36 drug clinical institutions, and more than 50 high-level talent projects.
