Johnson & Johnson announced plans to submit the OTTAVA robotic surgery system to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the second half of 2024.System's Experimental Medical Device Exemption (IDE) Application to initiate clinical trials.
Relying onJohnson & JohnsonWith over 135 years of leadership in the surgical field, the OTTAVA surgical system reimagines the surgical experience. The system is designed to integrateEthiconEthiThe powerful performance of con surgical instruments,Creating space in the operating room, simplifying complex workflows, and providing flexibility for clinical methods.
Hani Abouhalka, Chairman of the Robotics and Digital Division of Johnson & Johnson Medical TechnologyRepresentation"Johnson & Johnson was born with the advent of sterile sutures, and since then, we have helped surgeons improve patient care by providing revolutionary technologies in various types of surgeries. We believe the future of surgery is personalized. Starting with the connection between people and patients, surgeons, and operating room staff, we are uncovering how science and technology can enhance the surgical experience and treatment outcomes for every participant. The design goal of OTTAVA is to deliver this experience in any operating room around the world."

OTTAVA integrates four robotic arms into a standard-sized operating table. This unified architecture allows the robotic arms to be visible when needed and retracted under the table when not in use. This design eliminates mobility and collaboration barriers in the robotic operating room, providing the surgical team with freedom and flexibility to adapt to clinical workflows and personalized patient needs.
The system's "dual-motion" function, which integrates the unified movement of the operating table and robotic arms, is designed to allow the surgical team to address critical clinical needs during surgery, such as repositioning the patient without interrupting the procedure.
Gastrointestinal and general surgeon Eduardo Parra-Davila stated:"TodayToday, most operating rooms do not have robots because operating rooms are not built for robots. MedicalThe industry needs a highly adaptable solution that can be easily utilized in any operating room around the world.Use, and maintain a certain space within the operating room system. As surgeons, we need space to improve the workflow in the operating room, enhance safety, and achieve 360-degree control over the patient so that we can operate according to our own plans.OTTAVA was born for this purpose.OTTAVA offers a unique design that can be integrated into any operating room, allowing surgeons to do what they want and excel at, which is focusing on patients.”
Following authorized commercial launch, OTTAVA will join Johnson & Johnson’s commercially available robotic ecosystem, which includes the MONARCH™ Surgical Platform and VELYSTM Robotic-Assisted Solution, supported by the company’s global surgical education and clinical training team of experts.
# AboutOttava Laparoscopic Surgical Robot
Johnson & Johnson’s surgical robotics platform, Ottava, is designed to provide unparalleled flexibility and control for surgical interventions. Johnson & Johnson’s digital ecosystem features a four-arm and zero-footprint design, enabling minimally invasive treatment of challenging anatomical structures, enhancing patient accessibility, and improving surgical workflows. The word "Ottava" in Italian means playing music an octave higher, and as the name suggests, the Johnson & Johnson robotic system aims to elevate robotics technology to a new level.

Compared with any other available system on the market, the Ottava Surgical System improves surgical outcomes for various diseases by providing robotic control and coordination throughout the surgical procedure. Ottava incorporates the latest technology and integrates data capabilities, aiming to provide clinicians with the ability to enhance and deliver the best possible surgical results according to their technical understanding and knowledge level.
One of the main features of the technology introduced by Ottava is the potential for the device to expand into more interventions or endoluminal techniques, which would significantly broaden the scope of surgical robot use.

▲Da Vinci Surgical Robot
In 2000, the da Vinci became the first robotic surgical system to receive FDA approval for general laparoscopic surgery, and since then, Intuitive Surgical has continued to dominate the robot-assisted surgery market.
Currently, Intuitive Surgical dominates 92.3% of the general surgical robotic surgery market, including procedures such as hernia repair, hysterectomy, gallbladder removal, colectomy, myomectomy, and prostatectomy. Others involve orthopedic surgeries using Stryker's MAKO system and neurosurgery utilizing Medtronic's Mazor system. Johnson & Johnson is introducing Ottava into the rapidly expanding surgical robotics market, with plans to challenge Intuitive Surgical and increase its market share.
Like Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci, Ottava will be applicable to abdominal and thoracic surgeries, as well as types of procedures that typically do not involve robots. The operation of the Ottava surgical system will extend to vascular-based interventions, such as endoscopy, orthopedics, and catheter-based procedures.
With Ottava, doctors can examine and treat diseases on the same day, saving significant time for both patients and doctors. With the help of Ottava, surgeons can improve the precision of operations, thereby reducing side effects. In addition, the device is capable of performing multiple types of procedures, which helps hospitals avoid purchasing multiple robots designed for different purposes, saving them substantial indirect costs.
