On November 8th, at the 6th China International Import Expo (CIIE), BD Medical’s Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) division held a press conference titled “Innovation Simplified – MDS New Products, New Channels, New Strategies.” At the event, the global debut of PowerMe midline catheter products, specifically customized for Chinese healthcare professionals’ operational habits, filled a market gap in meeting medium- to long-term intravenous therapy needs in China's clinical practice. Star products such as PowerPICC SOLO and Sherlock 3CG Tip Location System were also showcased, providing a more comprehensive and diversified portfolio of vascular access solutions. Meanwhile, the star product StatLock officially expanded into e-commerce retail channels, leveraging digital and intelligent innovations to enhance patient accessibility and convenience.

In recent years, the aging process in China has been accelerating, and the health awareness of the population has been increasing. The detection rates of diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular conditions have been rising, leading to a continuous expansion in the patient population. Central venous access, as one of the most common treatment methods for managing such patients in clinical practice, is experiencing growing market demand. However, peripheral intravenous catheters, such as short peripheral catheters (commonly known as "indwelling needles"), remain the most frequently used tools in China’s infusion therapy field. These catheters typically must be replaced within 72 hours, which means that patients requiring long-term infusion therapy face repeated punctures, increased treatment costs, greater vascular damage, and a higher risk of infection.

BD's Global Launch of PowerMe: A Midline Catheter for Peripheral Insertion

According to reports, PowerMe is an advanced international midline catheter technology introduced by BD China from overseas. Before its launch in the Chinese market, it underwent six years of localized research, development, optimization, and improvement, and was officially approved for marketing in 2023 after final clinical trial evaluation. The product's innovations include an integrated, closed, needlestick injury prevention design and a single-wing needle-holding design, which align with the clinical usage habits and safe infusion concepts of Chinese healthcare professionals.

Deng Jianmin, Global Senior Vice President of BD and General Manager of Greater China, stated at the press conference: "The integration of AST technology into the PowerMe midline catheter fills a market gap in China for medium- to long-term infusion therapy needs in clinical intravenous treatment. It provides patients with a convenient and safe venous treatment option, expanding the range of choices for intravenous infusion tools. With the official approval and market launch of PowerMe, there is now a more comprehensive selection of intravenous infusion tools. BD is truly empowering the development of intravenous therapy by providing complete solutions, advancing the level of intravenous treatment in China and promoting industry growth."

At this year's CIIE, BD Medical simultaneously established strategic partnerships with Sinopharm Holding Medical Devices Co., Ltd., Sinopharm Health Online Co., Ltd., Shanghai Pharmaceutical Medical Devices (Beijing) Co., Ltd., China Medical Devices Shandong Co., Ltd., Sinopharm Group Nanjing Medical Devices Co., Ltd., and CR Jiangsu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Leveraging the advantages of logistics, information flow, and user base from the cooperation platforms, BD's StatLock products have been listed on the major e-commerce platforms of its partners, officially entering the new channel of e-commerce retail to enable more patients to purchase essential medical products in a timely manner.

According to reports, compared with the commonly used fixed tapes in current clinical practice, StatLock can reduce catheter displacement rate by 50%, making it an essential product for PICC catheter users.

Against the backdrop of China's digital and intelligent healthcare development, BD is also continuously exploring new directions. Lu Wen, Vice President of Greater China's Medication Delivery Solutions at BD, stated: "BD adheres to the principle of life first and remains committed to its strategy of 'Rooted in China, Serving China.' We gain insights into the actual needs of domestic clinical practitioners and patients, focus on key technologies and critical issues, and accelerate localized innovation and upgrades. We are actively exploring a digital and intelligent healthcare path with Chinese characteristics, contributing to the construction of a digital innovative healthcare ecosystem, supporting the Healthy China initiative, and benefiting more Chinese healthcare professionals and patients."
