Genentech and NVIDIA Forge Strategic Alliance to Advance AI-Driven Drug Discovery

Genentech, a subsidiary of Roche, announced a multi-year strategic research collaboration with NVIDIA Corporation.

This collaboration combines Genentech's expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), extensive biological and molecular data, and R&D with NVIDIA's leading technology in accelerated computing and AI to expedite the drug discovery and development process. The goal is to significantly enhance Genentech's cutting-edge AI research initiatives by upgrading its generative AI models and algorithms to an advanced AI platform, thereby accelerating the introduction of innovative therapies.

The cooperation will

Using NVIDIA's DGX Cloud platform, the focus is on enhancing and optimizing Genentech's proprietary machine learning (ML) algorithms and models. This platform is based on NVIDIA's proprietary supercomputing capabilities and software, and includes the generative AI platform BioNeMo for drug discovery.

NVIDIA to Impart Computational Expertise to Genentech’s Computational Science Team. This collaboration aims to enhance and expand Genentech's models, potentially leading to advancements in the NVIDIA platform.

This collaboration will also accelerate Genentech's "lab in a loop" system. In this system, computational models analyze comprehensive experimental data to identify patterns and make predictions that can be experimentally validated. These predictions are rapidly evaluated in the lab, and the results are reintegrated into the model.

This iterative process aims to continuously improve computational models, thereby developing more effective therapies.

Above, Dr. Aviv Regev, Head of Research and Early Development at Genentech, is very optimistic about the prospects of artificial intelligence and machine learning in new drug development.
