Recently, Beijing Weiming Shiguang Biotechnology Co., Ltd. ("Veminsyn"), an innovator in bio-active ingredients, has successfully closed a tens of millions of RMB Series B+ funding round, jointly invested by Huatai Genscript Fund and Haibang Capital.

This follows the company's nearly 100 million RMB investment round in May this year from L'Oréal and Nice Group. The funds from this financing will be primarily used to deepen the development of its AI technology platform, expand diversified application scenarios for bioactive materials, and accelerate the company's global business layout, injecting strong momentum into its continued innovation and growth in the field of bioactive materials.

Veminsyn is a technology company focusing on the R&D and production of bio-based innovative materials, co-founded by a team of doctors from Peking University and Tsinghua University.

The company has built an "AI + synthetic biology" material innovation and production platform. Based on product demands across multiple scenarios—from daily care to medical applications—it leverages AI to complete material design and develops specific biological cell factories for raw material production, providing downstream customers and end markets with green, safe, and effective raw materials and products.

AI Engine and Dual-Chassis Cell Factory

Since its establishment, Veminsyn has focused on bioactive material innovation and built a closed-loop system covering "bioactive molecule design, screening, efficacy evaluation, and large-scale production". It has fully empowered its synthetic biology technology platform with AI, and its core technology system centers on the "AI engine + dual-chassis cell factory":

AI Engine:

By leveraging open-source tools such as AlphaFold and RFDiffusion to enhance R&D efficiency, the company simultaneously accumulates high-quality proprietary non-public data through diverse approaches—including independent R&D, collaborations with universities, and joint development with clients. This data is used to conduct enhanced training on existing biological large models, strengthening the models' adaptability in specific fields and forming a flywheel effect of "business expansion generating data → high-quality data optimizing models → models feeding back to business upgrading."

Taking recombinant collagen design as an example, AI can directionally design molecules that meet specific needs, improving R&D efficiency by at least 5 times and significantly shortening the development cycle of innovative raw materials. In the future, the proportion of the company's R&D investment in AI will gradually increase to 50%, with a focus on developing specialized "intelligent agents." It also plans to open up intelligent agents for virtual cell testing and efficacy evaluation to clients for use.

Dual-chassis Cell Factory:

The company has laid out both microbial and plant cell factories. The former produces protein-based products such as polypeptides and collagen; the latter, relying on callus technology and a germplasm resource bank of rare plants, has induced calli from over 80 plant species including epiphyllum and century-old peonies. Among them, extracts from 3 callus samples have completed the filing for new cosmetic raw materials (accounting for 75% of similar filings with the drug regulatory authority), demonstrating industry-leading efficiency in transforming technological achievements into practical applications.

Meanwhile, plant calli induced in the laboratory can be further redifferentiated into cloned plant seedlings, which play an important role in the conservation of rare and endangered plants, achieving the dual unity of commercial value and ecological value.

Developing Differentiated "Advanced" Originals with the CRDMO Model

In terms of business model, Veminsyn adopts a dual-path approach of "independent R&D + CRDMO". It not only independently develops innovative raw materials, but also collaborates with downstream brands to co-develop and contract-manufacture new raw materials under the CRDMO (CRO + CDMO) model.

In product selection, the company follows a "reverse development" mindset, starting from customer needs. Its rare plant extracts developed through plant callus technology, which possess both scarcity and efficacy potential, have already secured partnerships with multiple well-known domestic and international brand clients—with the number of such clients exceeding those in the collagen product category.

In the protein field, the company scientifically differentiates the types and molecular sizes of collagen across different skin layers. For instance, type XVII collagen, developed for anti-aging and anti-hair loss purposes, is designed via AI into functional fragments of 500-800 Da, solving the problem of transdermal absorption. Additionally, it has pioneered a non-invasive transdermal testing platform based on human Raman spectroscopy to verify the real in vivo penetration of raw materials.

The successful completion of this B+ round of financing is not only a crucial milestone in Veminsyn's development journey, but also indicates that the company will embrace a new phase of coordinated development in technology, market expansion, and production capacity on its path of AI-empowered bioactive raw material innovation—injecting more vitality into the high-quality development of the industry.
