GSK (GSK.US) announced that its new drug Jemperli for treating a type of endometrial cancer has been approved by the EU.

GSK said in a statement on Monday that this immuno-oncology therapy has been approved for use in combination with chemotherapy to treat a subset of adult patients with an accumulation of genetic mutations. The EU also converted the conditional approval of Jemperli, either as a standalone treatment or following chemotherapy, into full approval.

It is understood that GSK has invested a significant amount of funds in this drug and is attempting to ultimately prove its efficacy in treating various types of cancer.

Mansoor Raza Mirza, Chief Oncologist at Copenhagen University Hospital and lead investigator of GSK's pivotal clinical trial, stated that this decision could "establish a new treatment standard for certain patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer in the EU."

Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration also approved Jemperli.
