Continuously Promoting Sino-US
International Ophthalmology Exchange and Cooperation
The National Eye Institute (NEI) is one of the key collaborating institutions of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University. The collaboration between the two parties, which began in the early 1980s, has become an active force in Sino-US medical exchange. After the establishment of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, in 1984, the first director of the center, Professor Mao Wenshu, and others, along with Dr. C. Kupfer, then-director of the U.S. National Eye Institute, conducted multiple visits and negotiations. This led to cooperation between the two institutions in areas such as glaucoma and cataract screening, as well as ophthalmic epidemiological investigations. In a letter to an official at China's Ministry of Health, then-U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Koop noted that ophthalmic collaboration would become another new field in Sino-American medical science and technology cooperation.
