Gilead Inks $848M Deal for First-in-Class Anti-Tumor Immunotherapy COM503 Targeting IL-18BP

Gilead Sciences today announced an agreement with Compugen Ltd.,Gilead Sciences gains exclusive rights to Compugen’s potential “first-in-class” preclinical Interleukin-18 Binding Protein (IL-18BP) targeted antibody COM503, with the total deal potentially worth up to $848 million.

IL-18 is an inflammasome-induced pro-inflammatory cytokine present in the tumor microenvironment, capable of naturally activating anti-tumor effector cells such as T and NK cells.However, endogenous IL-18BP can bind to IL-18 with high affinity, thereby naturally blocking the transmission of anti-tumor signals. Through its predictive computational discovery capabilities, Compugen is able to identify new drug targets and biological pathways for the development of novel cancer immunotherapies.COM503 isDeveloped by CompugenA potential "first-in-class" high-affinity antibody that blocks the interaction between IL-18BP and IL-18, thereby releasing natural IL-18 in the tumor microenvironment to inhibit cancer growth.

According to the terms of the agreement,Compugen will continue to be responsible for the preclinical development of COM503 and the future Phase 1 clinical study.Gilead will then have exclusive rights to develop and commercialize COM503.Gilead Sciences to Pay Compugen $60 Million Upfront and $30 Million in Near-Term Milestone Payments, which is subject to the IND application for COM503 being approved as expected in 2024. In addition,Compugen is also eligible to receive up to $758 million in future development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments, with the total transaction potentially reaching $848 million.
