On January 3, Suzhou Ribo Life Science Co., Ltd. and Ribo International Research and Development Center jointly announced a research and development collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim.Co-develop RNAi therapies for the treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH)。This collaboration has a potential value exceeding 2 billion US dollars.
It is estimated that there are over 440 million NASH patients globally, suffering from an inflammatory liver disease caused by the accumulation of fat in the liver. Over time, NASH can lead to liver fibrosis and tissue scarring, with many patients developing further complications such as cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer. Currently, there are no approved drugs for the treatment of NASH, and patients urgently need new effective treatment options to prevent the progression of NASH and maintain or restore liver function.
Ribo's RIBO-GalSTAR technology platform is capable of developing RNAi therapies that specifically target pathogenic genes in hepatocytes, selectively inhibiting their mRNA.RNAi therapy has the potential to target undruggable targets that traditional drug molecules cannot address, achieving the goal of treating corresponding diseases.
According to the terms of the collaboration, in addition to receiving an upfront payment, Ribo will be entitled to receive milestone payments based on the conduct of clinical studies, regulatory submissions, and commercial successes, with a total amount exceeding 2 billion US dollars in this multi-target collaboration project.
