Recently, GSK and Aiolos Bio jointly announced that they have reached an agreement under which GSK will acquire Aiolos Bio for an upfront payment of $1 billion and up to $400 million in regulatory milestone payments. This acquisition expands GSK's respiratory disease pipeline by adding AIO-001, a long-acting anti-thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) monoclonal antibody poised to enter phase 2 clinical trials. This candidate therapy is expected to broaden GSK's portfolio of biologics for respiratory diseases, extending coverage to a wider population of asthma patients.Aiolos Bio is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to addressing unmet medical needs for patients with respiratory and inflammatory diseases. The company’s team has extensive clinical experience and has been involved in the development of more than 30 FDA-approved drugs. In August 2023, Aiolos Bio obtained the exclusive global development and commercialization rights for AIO-001 outside of Greater China from Hengrui Medicine. In October 2023, Aiolos Bio completed a $245 millionSeries A Oversubscription, to continue advancing its lead candidate drug AIO-001 in Phase 2 clinical trials for patients with moderate to severe asthma, while actively evaluating other development opportunities.AIO-001 is a potential "best-in-class" long-acting anti-TSLP monoclonal antibody that, due to its differential efficacy and long half-life, requires dosing only once every 6 months.Targeting the TSLP pathway addresses a key driver of major allergic and inflammatory responses. TSLP is a clinically validated target for asthma treatment, regardless of the patient's biomarker status. In multiple clinical studies, AIO-001 demonstrated encouraging safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and bioactivity in both healthy subjects and asthma patients, with low immunogenicity.AIO-001 is about to enter Phase 2 clinical development for the treatment of adult asthma patients and has the potential for use in other indications, including chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. In addition, GSK has a portfolio of marketed and investigational drugs for the treatment of a range of respiratory diseases, including biologics aimed at treating patients with high eosinophil or high T2 inflammatory asthma.
