On September 15, the latest update on the NMPA official website revealed that Chengdu Easton Pharmaceuticals' Class 4 generic drug Arotinolol Hydrochloride Tablets has been approved and passed consistency evaluation. Prior to this, four Chinese pharmaceutical companies had already obtained approval and passed consistency evaluation for this product.
Arotinolol Hydrochloride Tablets were originally developed by Japan's Sumitomo Pharma. As a third-generation β-blocker—an α/β receptor blocker—they are indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension (mild to moderate), angina pectoris, tachyarrhythmia, and essential tremor, while also providing protective effects on the heart, brain, and kidneys. The product has been marketed in China for many years and is currently included in the National Reimbursement Drug List (Category B). In December 2021, Shijiazhuang Geri Pharmaceutical obtained the first domestic generic approval, and Chengdu Easton Pharmaceuticals has become the fifth Chinese manufacturer to receive approval for this product.
According to the database of Pharnexcloud, the sales of Arotinolol Hydrochloride Tablets have been growing rapidly. In 2024, the sales of this drug approached 500 million yuan, creating a sales peak in nearly five years. In the first quarter of 2025, the sales reached 280 million yuan, with a growth rate of 19.07%, showing a very strong growth momentum.
At the same time, the competitive landscape is quietly changing. With Arotinolol Hydrochloride Tablets of Chinese brands come to market successively, original research company, Japan's Sumitomo's market share has been gradually eroded and shows a downward trend. In 2024, the market share of the original product dropped to 46.84%. It can be foreseen that against such a backdrop, Chinese brands have great potential.
As of now, Chengdu Easton Pharmaceuticals has had forty-five varieties that have been approved and passed the evaluation. Except Arotinolol Hydrochloride Tablets, since this year this pharmaceutical company has also got 10 varieties, including Perampanel Tablets, Dacomitinib Tablets, Diprophylline Injection, Oxazepam Tablets, Bumetanide Injection, of which 6 types are tablets and 4 types injectables.
