【Pharmaceutical Network Industry DynamicsThe "report cards" of multinational pharmaceutical companies for 2023 are being gradually unveiled. According to industry statistics, as of February 3, at least eight multinational pharmaceutical companies have released their full-year financial reports for 2023. Ranked by revenue from highest to lowest, they are Johnson & Johnson, Roche, Merck & Co., Inc., Pfizer, Sanofi, Novartis, GSK, and Novo Nordisk.

Johnson & Johnson stood out among the aforementioned eight multinational pharmaceutical companies, with a total revenue of $85.2 billion in 2023, representing a year-on-year increase of 6.5%. In 2023, Johnson & Johnson completed the spin-off of its consumer health business. Its pharmaceuticals business generated revenue of $54.759 billion, while its medical technology business brought in $30.4 billion. It is evident that the pharmaceuticals business accounted for the lion's share of Johnson & Johnson's total revenue. The company’s pharmaceuticals division primarily focuses on areas such as immunology, oncology, neuroscience, infectious diseases, pulmonary arterial hypertension, cardiovascular and metabolic conditions. In 2023, the growth of its oncology business was mainly driven by increased sales of products like Daratumumab, Apalutamide, and Ibrutinib. Notably, Daratumumab generated nearly $10 billion in sales. In the field of immunology, products such as Ustekinumab, Infliximab, Guselkumab, and Golimumab collectively contributed $18.041 billion in revenue. Among these, Ustekinumab alone achieved sales exceeding $10.8 billion.

Next is Roche, with a total revenue of $65.627 billion in 2023, representing a year-on-year increase of 1%; net profit was CHF 12.358 billion, up 7% year-on-year. Roche's pharmaceutical business mainly focuses on disease areas such as oncology, immunology, neurology, hemophilia, infectious diseases, and ophthalmology. Among them, oncology is the main area where Roche exerts its efforts and generates primary income, with a combined revenue of CHF 19.087 billion in 2023, up 4% year-on-year. In the field of ophthalmology, the innovative VEGF-A/Ang2 bispecific antibody "Faricimab," specifically designed for intravitreal injection, also performed notably, with sales reaching CHF 2.357 billion in 2023, representing a staggering year-on-year increase of 324%.

MSD's K drug successfully claimed the top spot as the "King of Drugs," drawing significant attention within the industry. MSD's total revenue in 2023 was $60.115 billion, a year-over-year increase of 1%, with the K drug generating $25.011 billion in revenue for the year, marking a 19% increase year-over-year, effectively shouldering nearly half of the company's revenue. Reportedly, the K drug was approved for marketing in the United States in September 2014, and to date, it has received approval for 39 indications in the U.S. In 2018, the K drug was approved for marketing in China, where it has since received approval for 12 indications. Some institutions predict that the sales of the K drug could reach the milestone of $30 billion by 2028. In terms of pharmaceutical business, MSD mainly focuses on areas such as oncology, immunology, and neurology. In 2023, this segment generated $53.583 billion in revenue, a year-over-year increase of 3%. Revenue from the China region amounted to $6.71 billion, marking a 32% increase year-over-year.

In addition, regarding the overall revenue situation of several other multinational pharmaceutical companies that have disclosed their financial reports, except for Pfizer's 41% revenue decline in 2023, all others achieved growth. Pfizer's total revenue in 2023 was $58.496 billion, with net profit dropping 93% year-over-year to $2.119 billion. In 2023, Pfizer's vaccine product Comirnaty generated $11.22 billion in revenue, a year-over-year decrease of 70%. However, excluding the impacts of Comirnaty and the oral treatment drug Paxlovid, Pfizer's revenue last year increased by 7%. Moreover, in 2023, Pfizer acquired Seagen, an anticancer drug manufacturer, for $43 billion, entering the ADC (Antibody-Drug Conjugate) drug field, which is currently a highly competitive area being pursued by leading pharmaceutical companies including Roche, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Merck & Co., Inc., Gilead Sciences, and AstraZeneca. At the same time, Pfizer has also set its sights on the rapidly developing weight-loss drug market. At the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in early 2024, Pfizer’s CEO stated during the conference that the obesity drug market is an area where Pfizer has the capability to participate and succeed, and the company must be involved.
