Roche Reports 7% Revenue and 9% Net Profit Decline in 2023 Annual Results

On February 1, Swiss giantF. Hoffmann-La Roche LtdReleased 2023 financial report. Roche's revenue in 2023 was 58.716 billion Swiss francs.(CHF, exchange rate with USD approximately 1:1.19), a year-on-year decrease of 7%, with a net profit of 12.358 billion Swiss francs, a year-on-year decrease of 9%. Notably, despite the decline in both sales and net profit, Roche's investment in R&D has not changed significantly, with a total investment of 13.237 billion Swiss francs in 2023, still ranking among the top in the pharmaceutical industry.
Roche has two major business divisions: pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. The pharmaceutical business achieved annual revenue of 44.612 billion Swiss francs, representing a year-on-year increase of 6%. Diagnostic business revenue reached 14.104 billion Swiss francs, reflecting a year-on-year decrease of 13%. The pharmaceutical business is the main source of Roche's profits, with an operating profit of 17.132 billion Swiss francs and a profit margin of 38.8%. In comparison, the diagnostic business has weaker profitability, with a profit margin of only 15.4% and an operating profit of 2.171 billion Swiss francs.
Roche's pharmaceuticals business includes oncology, immunology, and neuroscience,Hemophilia, Ophthalmology, and Anti-infectives. In 2023, the revenues were 19.87 billion Swiss francs (an increase of 4% year-on-year, excluding the impact of exchange rate changes, the same below), 6.242 billion Swiss francs (a decrease of 7%), 8.445 billion Swiss francs (an increase of 16%), 4.147 billion Swiss francs (an increase of 16%), and 2.865 billion Swiss francs (an increase of 85%), respectively.
Roche's products are highly concentrated in the anti-tumor field, featuring Perjeta (pertuzumab), Tecentriq (atezolizumab), Kadcyla (ado-trastuzumab emtansine), Herceptin (trastuzumab), Avastin (Bevacizumab), Alecensa (Alectinib), MabThera/Rituxan (Rituximab), Phesgo (pertuzumab/trastuzumab/hyaluronidase-zzxf), Polivy (polatuzumab vedotin), Gazyva/Gazyvaro (obinutuzumab), Erivedge (vismodegib), and 11 other well-known products. However, the most well-known products such as trastuzumab, bevacizumab, and rituximab have seen a significant drop in sales due to the patent cliff. The PD-L1 antibody atezolizumab is unable to sustain the entire pipeline, and Roche's influence in the oncology field is gradually declining.
In the immunology field, Roche possesses six major products: Tocilizumab (Actemra/RoActemra), Omalizumab (Xolair), Pulmozyme (Inhaled Alpha-Dornase), CellCept (Mycophenolate Mofetil), MabThera/Rituxan (Rituximab), and Esbriet (Pirfenidone). However, except for Tocilizumab, almost all are mature older products, making sales contraction inevitable.
The neuroscience field is a highlight for Roche. The CD20 antibody Ocrevus (ocrelizumab) created a market sensation after its launch, generating revenue of 6.381 billion Swiss francs (approximately $7.593 billion USD) in 2023, making it the highest-selling product for Roche. The rare disease drug Evrysdi (risdiplam) also performed well, with revenue reaching 1.419 billion Swiss francs.
In the hemophilia field, Roche has only one product, Hemlibra (emicizumab), but its significant clinical advantages have gained a huge market response, with sales reaching 4.147 billion Swiss francs in 2023, making it Roche's second-largest product. In ophthalmology, Roche's main products areVabysmo(faricimab) and Lucentis (ranibizumab), both indicated for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema. Although ranibizumab is facing a patent cliff, the new product not only bolsters the pipeline but also expands its influence further.
