Introduction: Tirzepatide, the glucose-lowering version of Mounjaro, achieved annual sales of $5.163 billion

On February 6, 2024, Eli Lilly and Company released its Q4 and full-year financial report for 2023. The revenue from new products launched after 2022 in Q4 was $2.49 billion, mainly driven by the growth of two products containing tirzepatide. Other growth primarily came from the CDK4/6 inhibitor Verzenio and the SGLT2 inhibitor Jardiance.

Mounjaro, the hypoglycemic version of tirzepatide, achieved annual sales of $5.163 billion, continuing its previous myth of rapid growth.

Zepbound, the weight-loss version of tirzepatide, was approved in November last year and went on sale on December 5th, generating $176 million in sales in less than a month.

Tirzepatide has also achieved significant breakthroughs in expanded indications, demonstrating excellent efficacy in Phase II clinical trials for NASH.

In 2023, Novo Nordisk's semaglutide generated $21.2 billion in sales, while liraglutide achieved $2.75 billion, totaling $24 billion. Eli Lilly's tirzepatide reached $5.34 billion in sales, and dulaglutide achieved $7.13 billion, amounting to $12.47 billion. The combined sales of four core GLP-1 products from the two companies totaled $36.5 billion, supporting Eli Lilly's market value of $670 billion and Novo Nordisk's market value of $520 billion.
