【Pharmaceutical Network Enterprise NewsRecently, it was reported that the inhalation aerosol production and supply base project, with a total investment of 700 million US dollars by the multinational pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca in Qingdao High-tech Zone, has entered the full construction phase.
The project covers an area of 80 mu, with a building area of 56,300 square meters. It mainly constructs intelligent production workshops and laboratories for Budesonide/Formoterol/Glycopyrronium inhalation aerosol. After completion, it will mainly engage in the production and assembly of inhalation aerosol products, including treatments for respiratory diseases. Upon reaching full production capacity, the project is expected to generate an annual revenue of 5.5 billion yuan and taxes of 340 million yuan.
It is reported that, in addition to the establishment and capacity expansion of the production and supply base, AstraZeneca is also actively supporting Qingdao City in building a comprehensive prevention and control system and management model for COPD. Currently, the project has completed screening for over 2 million people and pulmonary function testing for nearly 200,000 people. Meanwhile, AstraZeneca has supported the release of the "Technical Plan for COPD Screening and Management" and the "PCCM Primary Respiratory Chronic Disease Construction Plan," helping Qingdao create an "early screening, early diagnosis, early treatment" model across the city.
In addition, AstraZeneca will continue to accelerate its business expansion and strategic layout in Shandong in 2024. For example, in terms of production, the Qingdao production and supply base will provide high-quality innovative drugs for Chinese patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and other respiratory diseases; in the field of rare diseases, comprehensive research and development cooperation will be actively carried out in areas such as drug innovation, medical transformation, and clinical verification, further enhancing the R&D level of innovative drugs for rare diseases, jointly promoting the development of the medical, research, academic, and industrial systems for rare disease diagnosis and treatment, and contributing to the achievement of the "Healthy China 2030" goals.
The layout of the Qingdao market is just a microcosm of AstraZeneca's focus on the Chinese pharmaceuticals market. At the "2024 Shanghai Biomedical Industry International Development Conference" held in Shanghai on February 26, AstraZeneca announced that Shanghai would become its fifth global strategic center and unveiled the "2024 Shanghai Pharmaceutical Innovation Enterprise Cooperation Overseas Expansion Plan." This plan will cover emerging markets along the Belt and Road as well as developed countries such as Europe, the US, and Japan. Through reciprocal visits and matchmaking, it aims to support 30 outstanding Shanghai-based enterprises in expanding overseas, continuously promoting cross-border cooperation and exchange in pharmaceutical innovation.
During the conference, AstraZeneca, together with Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, announced the launch of the "Green Ribbon Liver Cancer Early Screening and Diagnosis Program" (referred to as the "Green Ribbon Program"). This initiative aims to promote early screening and diagnosis of liver cancer, facilitate high-risk population screening for liver cancer, validate new technologies for early liver cancer detection, promote standardized diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer, and enhance public education on disease prevention. It will help China achieve its key goals in cancer prevention and control.
It is reported that during its 30 years of development in China, AstraZeneca, based in Shanghai and facing the whole country, has fully seized opportunities, continuously increased investment, upgraded its layout in China, and accelerated its localization process.
At the beginning of 2024, AstraZeneca also adjusted its structure in China. The main structure is divided into oncology, rare diseases, and biopharmaceuticals business. Among them, the China Biopharmaceuticals Business (BBU) is a newly added structure, encompassing CVRM (Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolism Business Unit), Respiratory (R&I), Vaccines and Immunization (V&I). This adjustment aligns with AstraZeneca's globally updated strategy.
The Chinese market has also rewarded AstraZeneca with strong performance. The Q4 2023 financial report shows that AstraZeneca's Q4 revenue reached $12.02 billion, a year-on-year increase of 7.2%, surpassing market expectations; core earnings per share were $1.45, exceeding market expectations of $0.76. The company achieved an annual revenue of $45.81 billion, a year-on-year increase of 6%. Revenue from the Chinese market was $5.876 billion, accounting for 13%.
