BD Life Sciences President Dave Hickey Announces Retirement Amid Leadership Transition

Recently, BD announced that Dave Hickey, President of its Life Sciences segment, plans to retire on July 1. However, BD has not yet announced a successor for Hickey but intends to identify the next leader before this executive's retirement.

Hiji joined BD in 2014 as the General Manager of Microbiology and was promoted to President of Diagnostic Systems two years later. After another promotion in 2019, Hiji assumed his current position at the company in 2021.

He currently oversees BD's Biosciences and Integrated Diagnostic Solutions units, which sell products such as flow cytometers and equipment for sample collection, transportation, and testing. In BD's fiscal year 2023, the life sciences segment contracted by nearly 8% as the diagnostics unit reported a sales decline of over 13%.

The department's sales declined again in the first quarter of BD's fiscal year 2024, dropping by 1% on a reported basis, as growth in the microbiology platform and molecular in vitro diagnostics reagents failed to offset revenue declines in other parts of the department.

BD Chief Financial Officer Christopher Deloreyphis said in an early February earnings call with investors, "China and respiratory are the main drivers of Q1 revenue growth, below our full-year target." "The respiratory season alone impacted the company's overall growth by approximately 150 basis points."

BD has not yet disclosed who will take over the leadership of the life sciences division after Hickey's retirement. Previously, the company promoted from within when Patrick Kaltenbach succeeded the retiring John DeFord as chief technology officer, and Hickey was promoted to president. In 2021, BD hired Brooke Story to succeed Hickey as president of integrated diagnostic solutions, but last year transferred her to lead the surgical business as president.
