Human Natural Protein Can Form Virus-like Capsids and Be Engineered as mRNA Delivery VectorsOn March 5, 2024, Professor Zhang Feng's team published a research paper titled: Human paraneoplastic antigen Ma2 (PNMA2) forms icosahedral capsids that can be engineered for mRNA delivery in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The study developed an mRNA delivery method based on the human PNMA2 protein, which naturally forms icosahedral capsids in human cells. Engineered variants of PNMA2 (ePNMA2) can encapsulate mRNA in vitro and deliver it to host cells.Science | Amazing BioSUM Sticker: Can Monitor Life-Threatening Postoperative Complications in Real TimeRecently, a latest study published in the journal *Science* has brought a breakthrough. A joint research team developed a novel sticker material that monitors pH changes in organ tissues in real time through ultrasound, indicating anastomotic leakage. The authors refer to this biodegradable, shape-adaptive, and ultrasound-readable material structure as "BioSUM." Professor John Rogers from Northwestern University, Researcher Heling Wang currently at Tsinghua University, and Professor Chet Hammill from Washington University in St. Louis are the co-corresponding authors of the paper.Among anastomotic leaks from different sites, gastric fluid is acidic due to the presence of gastric acid; pancreatic fluid is alkaline; and the leaked fluid from the intestines is weakly acidic with a pH slightly lower than that of normal tissue. If a "pH reagent" readable by ultrasound could be placed inside the body, timely monitoring of anastomotic leaks could be achieved through changes in pH values. BioSUM can reveal fluid leakage within the body with high sensitivity and specificity, enabling doctors to intervene earlier. After the patient recovers, the biocompatible, bioabsorbable patch will disappear on its own without the need for surgical removal. The research team has also developed software capable of automatically analyzing images, making it convenient for radiologists to use.
