Pharmaceutical Product R&D Developer

March 20,BayerBayer announces its pharmaceuticals division is entering the next phase of development, with an upcoming reorganization of its executive leadership team. According to Endpoints News and Fierce Pharma, the size of Bayer's pharmaceutical leadership team will be "essentially halved," reducing the number of executives from 14 to 8. Among those leaving the company are Anne-Grethe Mortensen, Global Head of Marketing, Gerd Kruger, Head of Radiology, and Heiko Schipper, Head of Consumer Health. Additionally, Bayer has established a new "Global Commercialization" unit.

Bayer has made significant progress in strengthening its R&D portfolio and expanding capabilities in breakthrough treatment areas such as gene therapy and cell therapy through collaboration and acquisitions. The next step for Bayer's pharmaceuticals division will be to focus on updating its product pipeline, increasing the value of its product portfolio, and leveraging a new operational model to become a key growth driver for Bayer.
Starting from April 1, 2024, Sebastian Guth will assume the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO), overseeing commercial operations across all markets of the company. In this position, Guth will collaborate with teams in various countries and regions to drive the implementation of commercial strategies aimed at enhancing customer value. Guth will continue to report to Stefan Oelrich, President of Bayer's Pharmaceuticals Division.
The newly established "Global Commercialization" department will include the main parts of the company’s former Strategic Business Unit Oncology, Global Marketing, Digital & Commercial Innovation, as well as parts of Medical Affairs and Pharmacovigilance. The organization will be led by Christine Roth, effective June 1, 2024. Roth, who currently leads the company’s oncology strategic business unit, will continue to report to Stefan Oelrich.
The R&D department will continue to be led by Christian Rommel, and the product supply department will continue to be led by Holger Weintritt. Oliver Renner (Communications), Ursula Koeniger (Legal), and Christoph Bertram (Human Resources) will remain on the leadership team. Chief Medical Officer Michael Devoy will continue in his role but will not join the leadership team.
Bayer spokesperson could not confirm the future roles of two members in the leadership team: Chief Financial Officer Oliver Bressier and China Commercial Operations Head Zhou Xiaolan.
"We have decided to abolish the traditional model where functional departments operate independently and are divided into layers. We will replace it with a new operating model centered around product and customer teams," said Stefan Oelrich, President of Bayer's pharmaceuticals division. "These changes in our leadership team reflect our new approach to fully realizing our growth potential."
