Recently, GE Healthcare announced the launch of Caption AI, an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven software, for its dual-head, handheld, wireless, point-of-care ultrasound imaging system, Vscan Air SL.
GE Healthcare's Vscan Air SL handheld ultrasound imaging system was officially launched in August 2023. This device allows clinicians to efficiently capture and view clear cardiac and vascular images at the patient’s side, thereby accelerating diagnostic and treatment decisions.

GE Healthcare stated that, with the addition of Caption AI,Clinicians using the Vscan Air SL handheld ultrasound will be able to obtain real-time, step-by-step guidance to capture diagnostic-quality images and automatic ejection fraction estimates, thereby assisting in clinical decision-making in cardiac settings. The new feature will make its debut at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) 2024 Scientific Session & Expo (April 6-8, Atlanta, USA).
Cardiologist Jordan B Strom stated, "With the rise in cardiovascular diseases and a global shortage of ultrasound professionals, innovations like the Vscan Air SL with AI-powered captioning are revolutionizing cardiac care by enabling rapid and confident assessments at the point of care. AI guidance holds tremendous potential in the ultrasound field as it can assist both experts and relatively new users in retrieving diagnostic-quality information to make timely and accurate decisions, getting patients on the right path more quickly."
Caption AI provides real-time visual guidance to prompt users to adjust the probe's position and includes a quality indicator to ensure users obtain the best possible images. Once the image is captured, the AutoEF feature automatically calculates the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Additionally, users can utilize the auto-capture function to scan and save the best clip, capturing the highest quality image from each view.
GE Healthcare stated: "The integration of Caption AI with the Vscan Air SL handheld ultrasound device opens a new chapter in cardiac screening. This technology provides users with guidance and tools for high-quality ultrasound scanning and supports the early detection of heart disease. The strategic acquisition of Caption Health in 2023 will continue to expand the capabilities of our products and strengthen our leadership in the fields of ultrasound and emerging artificial intelligence."
Currently, GE Healthcare has become the absolute leader in the ultrasound field, with its products covering high-end, mid-range, and low-end markets. It holds leading positions in application markets such as obstetrics, radiology, and cardiology. At present, GE Healthcare's ultrasound product portfolio has expanded from the diagnostic field to the surgical visualization field, laying a solid foundation for its latest focus on the AI ultrasound track.
Data shows that the global intraoperative ultrasound market size increased from USD 790.6 million in 2014 to USD 894.03 million in 2018, and is expected to reach USD 1.12 billion by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.27% from 2019 to 2025. GE Healthcare, as the largest company in the global intraoperative ultrasound diagnostics industry, held a revenue market share of 26% in 2018. Currently, ultrasound products manufactured at the Wuxi plant account for 40% of GE Healthcare's global ultrasound sales.
In early August 2021, GE Healthcare officially launched the fifth-generation ultrasound product family. The new generation of ultrasound technology has undergone a transformation from hardware beamforming to software beamforming, and from circuit boards + code to GPU + software,告别ing the more than forty-year-old hardware beamformer platform and achieving an essential technological breakthrough.

It is reported that the fifth-generation ultrasound product family of GE Healthcare, based on the cSound™ Soft-Beam Imaging Platform, has successfully broken through the technical ceiling of ultrasound engineering, bringing outstanding features such as full-field pixel focusing, high frame rate, high real information volume, and AI artificial intelligence to imaging diagnostics. Through software beamforming, GPU, and imaging technologies ranging from the probe, high-speed big data storage, big data processor to OLED display, it achieves high-quality and distortion-free images, delivering precise diagnosis, intelligent workflow, and cutting-edge research for clinical applications.
Fortis Series Ultrasound Products
The new generation of ultrasound products —— the fifth-generation full-body ultrasound Fortis series was officially launched on November 25, 2021. It took 14 months from development to market release. This is the first high-end medical device in GE Healthcare's premium ultrasound series to be launched in China, and also the fastest ultrasound product landing by GE Healthcare.
High-End Obstetrics and Gynecology Ultrasound Voluson
March 2022,GE Healthcare announces that its high-end obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound products, Voluson™ E8 and Voluson™ E10 (hereinafter referred to as the China-produced Gold Standard E8 and China-produced Gold Standard E10), have received registration approval from the Jiangsu Provincial Medical Products Administration, and are officially put into production and launched in the market.
It is reported that the domestically produced Golden E8 and Golden E10 obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound systems, which have obtained market approval this time, are ultra-high-end products in the field of professional obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound. They are also the latest achievements of GE Healthcare's comprehensive domestic innovation at its Wuxi base.

Professional Obstetrics and Gynecology Ultrasound Voluson™ E10 / Voluson™ E8
According to the introduction, the domestically produced premium E8 and E10 models are consistent with GE Healthcare's global leadership and quality standards. In addition to featuring innovative technologies such as the third-generation curved convex matrix probe eM6C G3, the second-generation fetal heart quantification analysis FetalHQ 2.0, and micro-perfusion volumetric (quantitative) imaging Slowflow3D, the new products also integrate various intelligent applications specifically designed for obstetric and gynecological ultrasound clinical needs in China.
