Ophthalmic Gene Drug Developer
Pharmaceutical Manufacturer
On May 6, 2024, Neurophth, China's leading gene therapy company focused on ophthalmic diseases, and Bagó Group, Argentina's leading pharmaceutical group, announced an exclusive cooperation agreement. Neurophth granted Bagó the commercialization rights for its leading product, Nuweijia® (NFS-01, Opvika®, Eplareldo Gene Ocular Injection), in Argentina.
Neurophth® aims to treat Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy caused by ND4 mutations (LHON-ND4). It completed patient enrollment and dosing for the Phase III registrational clinical trial in China in February 2023. It is expected to be the second ophthalmic gene therapy product approved globally, with anticipated market approval in China by 2025. The Phase I/II clinical trial conducted in the United States completed all patient enrollment and dosing in February 2024.
Neurophth and Argentina have an inseparable bond: In 2018, Professor Li Bin, the founder of Neurophth, led a team to complete the world's largest sample size clinical study (IIT2) on LHON gene therapy with 159 cases. Among them, 10 Argentine patients were recommended by the patient association led by Professor Marcela Ciccioli (Stargardt’s APNES -RETINA ARGENTINA & PANAIRD) and traveled from Argentina to China to receive treatment with NRVJ® (NR082), completing their journey to regain sight. Long-term follow-up results over five years reported by local experts showed that the patients consistently maintained their improved vision, and their learning and quality of life had fundamentally improved.
