【Pharmaceutical Network Industry DynamicsIn recent years, with the intensification of population aging and the introduction of a series of policies encouraging pharmaceutical innovation, China's pharmaceutical market has experienced rapid development. This has also attracted multinational pharmaceutical companies to pay more attention to the Chinese market, launching and implementing a series of localized innovation and development strategies.
Currently, under the implementation of常态化 procurement and national negotiation policies, the pharmaceutical industry seems to have entered a "period of adjustment." From financial reports, although leading pharmaceutical companies such as Merck, AstraZeneca, and Novartis achieved growth in their 2023 performance in China, the growth momentum of most multinational pharmaceutical companies has only been maintained at 5%~10%.
However, overall, these pressures and challenges do not change the pace and determination of multinational pharmaceutical companies to continue accelerating their layout in the Chinese market.
In April 2024, at the Boehringer Ingelheim media briefing, Boehringer Ingelheim stated that the Chinese market is in sync with the global market. In the next five years, Boehringer Ingelheim aims to bring over 25 new products or new indications to the Chinese market. Over the next five years, the group plans to invest 4 billion RMB in R&D in China, of which 3.5 billion RMB will be allocated to its human pharmaceuticals business.
On March 1, 2024, AstraZeneca announced an investment of $475 million to build a new small-molecule drug manufacturing plant in Wuxi High-Tech Zone. It is expected that specific small-molecule drugs from AstraZeneca intended for the Chinese market will be produced at the new Wuxi plant, from formulation to packaging, and will supply both domestic and international markets. It is reported that AstraZeneca has been actively expanding its presence in the Chinese market this year. In February, AstraZeneca upgraded its operations in China and announced that Shanghai would become its fifth global strategic center; in early January, the company's $700-million project to construct an inhalation aerosol production and supply base in Qingdao High-Tech Zone entered the full construction phase.
Novo Nordisk, a leader in the weight-loss drug development field, recently revealed that the "weight-loss version" of semaglutide, Wegovy, is expected to be approved for marketing in China this year. To meet market supply demands, Novo Nordisk is also actively expanding production capacity. The company announced an investment of approximately 4 billion yuan in Tianjin for a sterile formulation expansion project, further enhancing its production capabilities in China to meet future demand for innovative drugs in the Chinese market.
Novartis Accelerates Entry into the Chinese Market, Emphasizing Strategic Layout in China. On January 5, Novartis announced the full acquisition of Sinolyne Pharma, bringing two IgA nephropathy drugs currently in clinical stages under its wing: atrasentan and zigakibart. Both products are currently in the clinical development phase. Atrasentan, an oral selective endothelin receptor (ETA) antagonist, is undergoing Phase III clinical development. It demonstrated a statistically significant and clinically meaningful reduction in proteinuria during an interim analysis at 36 weeks, successfully achieving the primary endpoint of the Phase III study. Zigakibart (BION-1301), a subcutaneously administered anti-APRIL (a proliferation-inducing ligand) monoclonal antibody, has received approval from China's Center for Drug Evaluation (CDE) and began Phase III clinical trials in October 2023.
In addition, in recent years, Sanofi has been continuously accelerating its local layout and increasing local investment in the Chinese market. In 2023, Sanofi achieved a breakthrough by obtaining approval for 12 major innovative products and indications in the Chinese market. Sanofi has set a goal to synchronize 90% of its new drug development pipeline with global efforts, hoping to introduce key global pipelines into China more quickly in the future.
