In the past two years, China's innovative drug R&D capabilities have rapidly improved, making China the second-largest country in new drug development, with the number of innovative drug pipelines second only to the United States.

Recently, the "2024 Pharmaceutical R&D Trends Annual Review White Paper" (hereinafter referred to as the White Paper) released by the internationally renowned consulting firm Citeline showed that in the ranking of the number of R&D pipelines,Hengrui Pharma, Sino Biopharm, Fosun Pharmaceutical, CSPCFour Chinese pharmaceutical companies enter TOP25.

Hengrui Pharma ranks 8th with 147 pipeline drugs. Sino Biopharm (103 pipeline drugs), Fosun Pharmaceutical (90 pipeline drugs), and CSPC (73 pipeline drugs) also enter the TOP25, ranking 15th, 17th, and 24th respectively.

Hengrui Pharma Becomes the First Chinese Pharmaceutical Company to Enter the TOP10 by Pipeline Scale, with a Year-on-Year Increase of 38.7% in Recorded Pipeline Scale.In terms of the number of original drugs in 2023, Hengrui Pharma ranked first with 138 drugs.ExceedRoche(125 models),Pfizer(127 items),AstraZeneca(103 products). Hengrui Pharma has the highest proportion of original drugs, with nearly 94% of the drugs in its R&D pipeline being independently developed. Sino Biopharm also saw a significant 72% increase in its pipeline scale this year. However, 20 years ago, there were almost no original compounds developed locally in China.

Regionally, although the United States still dominates, its advantage continues to decline. Of all drugs in development, 49.1% have some level of R&D activity in the U.S., down from 51.1% last year and falling below the 50% benchmark for the first time. Meanwhile, China has significantly increased its share, rising from 23.6% to 26.7%. Over the past few years of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a sustained rapid increase in the number of new drug pipelines in development, partly driven by a sharp rise in government investment in the pharmaceutical sector.

According to the white paper, a total of 1,270 pharmaceutical companies have their headquarters in China, second only to the United States. Among the top 10 companies by pipeline size that are headquartered in China, nine have experienced growth in their R&D pipeline scale, reflecting the growth currently underway in China's pharmaceutical industry.

In terms of therapeutic areas, 9 out of the top 10 diseases for pipeline drugs in China are cancers, with the top three being non-small cell lung cancer, breast cancer, and gastrointestinal tumors.

Summary

In terms of the ranking of pipeline numbers in China, apart from Hengrui Pharma, known as the "leading innovative drug company," Sino Biopharm, Fosun Pharmaceutical, and CSPC rank high. Beigene, Junshi Biosciences, Innovent Biologics, and Huadong Medicine are also within the TOP10 domestic pipeline rankings.
