China Finance Network, May 29th: Yesterday, Illumina (NASDAQ: ILMN) released its fifth annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report, highlighting the company's ongoing commitments to patients, communities, employees, and the planet in 2023, as well as the progress made in advancing human health.
"At Illumina, we are committed to improving human health through the power of genomics," said Jacob Thaysen, CEO of Illumina. "Our customers, partners, and employees will continue to take bold and meaningful actions to accelerate the accessibility of genomics, empower communities, integrate environmental sustainability, cultivate our workforce, and operate responsibly."
Illumina, Inc.'s corporate social responsibility program is rooted in four key areas, and the company's 2023 Corporate Social Responsibility Report showcases progress made in each area.
Illumina continues to make genomics more accessible by reducing the cost per sequencing unit, expanding into new markets, and enhancing the diversity of genomic data. In 2023, Illumina provided professional training to over 27,000 healthcare professional learners and continued to advocate for the inclusion of genomic testing in healthcare coverage, expanding access from 1.2 billion to 1.3 billion people. The company also launched several new products, including the NovaSeq™ X Series sequencers featuring XLEAP-SBS™ chemistry; the TruSight™ Oncology 500 ctDNA v2 research assay, enabling comprehensive variant analysis of liquid biopsy samples; and the 25B flow cell, which supports tens of thousands of whole genome sequencing runs annually for customers while achieving the lowest cost per sequencing unit across Illumina’s existing sequencing platforms.
In 2023, Illumina maintained zero net pay gap for the fifth consecutive year, with the proportion of female employees reaching 45%. The percentage of female executives increased by 5% over the past three years. Additionally, Illumina is committed to fostering a purpose-driven culture. In 2023, nearly 60% of employees globally participated in charitable donations and volunteer services.
As a leader in the genomics industry, Illumina plays a significant role in promoting planetary health. The NovaSeq™ X Series, launched by Illumina for the first time in 2023, utilizes more sustainable reagents, reducing packaging weight and waste by 90%, cutting plastic use by 50%, and decreasing the product's impact on climate change by 61%. Additionally, 100% of Illumina's global electricity usage has come from renewable energy sources for the second consecutive year.
In 2023, Illumina reinforced its commitment to business ethics practices and operational integrity by ensuring that 100% of its core facilities participated in third-party audit programs. Illumina also expanded its ISO data privacy certification to more products and completed the EU-U.S. and Switzerland-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (DPF) self-certification as well as ISO 27701 certification. Additionally, Illumina continued to implement strong corporate governance, maintaining an independent board of directors (all independent except for the CEO), an independent chair of the board, and 75% of standing committees chaired by women.
