On June 6, 2024, GlaxoSmithKline ("GSK") announced that the companyAcquire Elsie Biotechnologies ("Elsie") for $50 million (approximately £39 million), accelerating the development of the next generation of oligonucleotide drugs.
This acquisition combines GSK's expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning with the data generated by the Elsie platform, supporting the development of predictive models for future oligonucleotide drug design.
This agreement is not subject to closing conditions and the acquisition has been completed.
About Elsie
Elsie Biotechnologies is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to fully realizing the potential of oligonucleotide therapies by integrating drug discovery, development, and delivery processes, thereby enhancing therapeutic efficacy, reducing toxicity, and optimizing the delivery process.
The company's proprietary discovery platform is an ultra-high-throughput proprietary process that enables comprehensive evaluation of the chemical space of oligonucleotide molecules; by applying its proprietary encoding technology to oligonucleotide therapeutic candidates, researchers can assess all possible nucleotide sequences or chemical modification patterns to enhance activity, reduce toxicity, and improve delivery; additionally, Elsie Biotechnologies also applies its proprietary P(V) chemistry technology, including a set of novel reagents and processes, to synthesize a variety of oligonucleotide therapies in a fully synthetically controlled manner.
GSK reached licensing agreements with Elsie Biotechnologies in July 2023 and February 2024, respectively, for its proprietary discovery platform.
About Oligonucleotide Drugs
Oligonucleotide drugs (OND), also known as small nucleic acid drugs, together with mRNA drugs, form the two major细分 fields of nucleic acid drugs.Compared with traditional small molecule drugs and antibody drugs, oligonucleotide drugs have the advantages of high treatment efficiency, low drug toxicity, and strong specificity. Currently, they have great potential in the fields of treating metabolic diseases, genetic diseases, cancer, and preventing infectious diseases.
According to the differences in drug structure and mechanism of action, oligonucleotide drugs can be divided into antisense nucleic acids (ASO), small interfering nucleic acids (siRNA), microRNAs (miRNA), aptamers (Aptamer), and transfer RNA (tRNA) fragments, etc. According to the latest financial report statistics in 2023, the combined revenue of globally marketed small nucleic acid drugs has reached 4.091 billion US dollars.

According to Frost & Sullivan's forecast, the global oligonucleotide drug market size grew from US$10 million in 2016 to US$2.7 billion in 2020, with a compound annual growth rate of 305.4%. It is expected to reach US$10.9 billion by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 32.2% from 2020 to 2025.

GSK's Layout in the Oligonucleotide Field
Currently, GSK is advancing the use of oligonucleotides for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and steatotic liver disease, as well as other therapeutic areas beyond liver diseases. According to incomplete statistics, the company has nearly ten oligonucleotide drug candidates in its pipeline.

The above oligonucleotide drugs are mainly derived from the company's recent transactions with Arrowhead, Ionis, Prosensa, and others.
