Recently, TowardPi, a leading enterprise in China's high-end ophthalmic medical device industry, completed its D-round financing of 200 million yuan. This round of financing was led byMPCi Leads, GTJA Investment Group FollowsOther institutions followed suit with additional investments.

TowardPi (Beijing) Medical Technology Co.,Ltd was founded in 2017, and its core technology originates fromTsinghua Technology Transfer, the core technology team consists of dozens of Tsinghua University faculty, students, and alumni. Since its establishment, the company has achieved breakthroughs in multiple categories of high-end ophthalmic equipment through the vertical integration of clinical ophthalmology needs, innovative system functions, and high-performance upstream components.

Layout of Four Major Product Lines, Achieving Independent Technological Breakthrough

Currently, TowardPi has completed the layout of four major product lines: OCT, microscope, ultra-widefield camera, and biometer. Its ongoing projects, such as phacoemulsification and vitrectomy, femtosecond laser, etc., have also made key progress—

· In November 2020, TowardPi's first major product, "Beiming Kun" ophthalmic OCT, was launched at the China National Ophthalmology Annual Meeting (CCOS2020) in Xiamen. It achieved the world's fastest scanning speed of 400,000 scans per second, pioneered rapid ultra-widefield OCTA blood flow imaging detection, and promoted its inclusion in the diabetic retinopathy diagnosis guidelines.

· In March 2021, TowardPi released the "Meridian" optical biometer product, whose "panoramic dynamic axial length imaging" function has ushered in a new era of biometric measurement technology.

·In December 2022, at the Retina China 2022 conference held in Changsha, TowardPi unveiled the prototype of the "Fuxue" intraoperative OCT navigation surgical microscope, marking TowardPi's entry into the high-end market within this crucial细分领域 of ophthalmic equipment.

· In September 2023, TowardPi released the "Boyun" digital holographic intraoperative OCT navigation surgical microscope prototype at the China National Ophthalmology Annual Meeting (CCOS2023) in Changsha, achieving a comprehensive layout in the high-end market for surgical microscopes.

·In April 2024, TowardPi held the launch event for the "Zhuzhao" ultra-widefield fundus camera, further enhancing its presence in the high-end ophthalmic examination equipment sector.

·In June 2024, at the Retina China 2024 conference held in Wuxi, TowardPi launched its two high-end surgical microscope products, "Boyun" and "Fuxue." With a standard Wet-Lab setup, numerous renowned ophthalmology experts conducted animal eye surgeries on-site, experiencing a "science fiction-level" new surgical model featuring digital holographic intraoperative navigation. The experts unanimously praised the significant breakthrough in domestically produced high-end ophthalmic surgical microscopes.

Leverage Scientific Research Resources to Accelerate the Full Domestic Production of Ophthalmic Medical Devices in China

Since its establishment, TowardPi has relied on China's optoelectronic industry and scientific research institution resources, focusing on the independent research and development of key optoelectronic components. When the functionality of product systems was limited by components, the company was still able to achieve performance breakthroughs vertically through underlying technologies. This model also drove technological progress in the field of optoelectronic components in China for medical applications, demonstrating the direct promoting effect of new quality productivity on medical device enterprises.

Citing data from the "Blue Paper on the Current Status and Future Development Trends of the High-End Ophthalmic Equipment Industry" released by Frost & Sullivan, in 2023, TowardPi's ophthalmic OCT products have achieved a market share of 27% in public hospitals, ranking first in the domestic market. It is also the first Chinese enterprise to realize a "full product line" layout in high-end ophthalmic medical equipment.

Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of outstanding domestic companies like TowardPi, the trust of Chinese ophthalmologists in domestically produced products has significantly increased. It is believed that in the future, with the launch of TowardPi's high-end surgical microscope series "Dialing Clouds" and "Brushing Snow," as well as the promotion of new products such as "Candlelight" and "Meridian," the full localization of ophthalmic medical equipment will be rapidly achieved.

In addition, TowardPi's products have been installed and sold in many countries such as France, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Greece. Its overseas revenue is growing rapidly, and its global layout is becoming increasingly complete.

Currently, the financing pace of mid-to-late stage projects in the primary market has generally slowed down, but TowardPi's successful acquisition of investment from top-tier star institutions in this round fully demonstrates its outstanding technical strength and excellent market performance.

For such a high-growth industry leader——

MPCi founding managing partner Eric Xu statedChina has the largest number of patients with common ophthalmic diseases. With the popularity of electronic products and the aging population, the clinical demand in the ophthalmology field continues to grow, driving the rapid development of the market for precise diagnosis and treatment in ophthalmology. In just a few years since its establishment, TowardPi has broken the monopoly of imported products through fundamental independent innovation. It has already taken a leading position in multiple product lines domestically and has made breakthroughs overseas. The company is expected to become a globally competitive high-end equipment platform for ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment.

Yu Jianlin, Deputy General Manager of GTJA Investment Group, said:We are delighted to participate in TowardPi's current round of financing and remain confident in TowardPi’s leading position and overall strength in the ophthalmic equipment sector. Ophthalmic medical devices represent a multi-billion-dollar market that has long been monopolized by imported products, leaving significant room for domestic alternatives. As a leader in the ophthalmic device field, TowardPi launched the world's fastest 400k swept-source OCT, achieving truly top-tier global product performance. Its OCT market share has surpassed that of imported brands to become the largest in China. TowardPi boasts the industry's strongest R&D team and has successfully developed a product portfolio covering four major diagnostic devices: OCT, ophthalmic surgical microscopes, ultra-widefield fundus cameras, and optical biometers. These products match or even surpass the performance of imported alternatives, consistently delivering on key R&D milestones. GTJA Investment Group, as a professional investment institution focused on the healthcare industry, will firmly support TowardPi’s growth. We look forward to TowardPi’s full range of products benefiting patients with eye diseases worldwide, addressing unmet clinical needs globally, and becoming a globally recognized brand in the field of ophthalmic devices.
