AbbVie Inc. announced today the acquisition of Celsius Therapeutics, Inc. for $250 million. Celsius Therapeutics, Inc. is a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing novel drugs for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.The company's lead candidate drug, CEL383, is a potential "first-in-class" TREM1-targeting antibody for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Celsius Therapeutics' research and development model involves performing single-cell RNA sequencing on patient tissues, then using machine learning and artificial intelligence to analyze the massive amounts of data generated, identifying factors that drive disease.Many diseases may occur due to interactions or combined dysfunctions between different types of cells, and traditional gene sequencing, which measures the average of multiple cells, may fail to detect these disease-causing changes. Using single-cell RNA sequencing, Celsius Therapeutics, Inc. is able to obtain information on gene expression and behavioral changes of cells with very high clarity. When combined with machine learning, this information may provide insights into entirely new targets.

TREM1 has been identified as a key pathogenic gene in IBD, primarily expressed on inflammatory monocytes and neutrophils.In these and other cell types, TREM1 is located upstream of multiple known inflammatory pathways and can amplify inflammatory responses. CEL383 is an investigational antibody targeting TREM1. In preclinical trials, CEL383 has been shown to inhibit TREM1 signaling and reduce the levels of various inflammation-related mediators with high clinical relevance.The "first-in-human" Phase 1 clinical trial for CEL383 has been completed.This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled single ascending dose study to evaluate its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in healthy volunteers.
