On September 10, Carisma Therapeutics and Moderna announced the expansion of their collaboration, including the nomination of two targets for treating autoimmune diseases. These two targets will be exclusively partnered between Carisma and Moderna, with Carisma retaining all rights to autoimmune disease indications outside these nominated targets. Both parties will leverage Carisma's proprietary CAR-M technology and Moderna's mRNA/LNP platform to develop in vivo CAR-M therapies for autoimmune diseases.Carisma Therapeutics will receive research funding and is eligible for development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments, as well as royalties on net sales of commercialized products. Carisma will be responsible for discovering and optimizing drug candidates, while Moderna will handle the clinical development and commercialization of these drugs.Carisma Therapeutics, Inc. was founded in 2016 and completed its IPO in 2023. Carisma has been dedicated to developing cell therapies using macrophages (CAR-M) for many years.Carisma's engineered cell therapy relies on a breakthrough platform technology that enables genetic manipulation of bone marrow cells, including monocytes and macrophages, in vitro, which are then re-introduced into the patient's body, enabling a variety of therapeutic applications both within and beyond oncology.
