On October 28, 2024, Beijing Yimiaoshenzhou Medical Techology Co., Ltd. ("Yimiao Shenzhou") announced a collaboration with Beijing Sunshine Nohe Drug Research Co., Ltd. ("SunNovo") to co-developZM001 Injection (referred to as “ZM001”), a next-generation CAR-T drug for the treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), has received the Clinical Trial Approval Notice from the National Medical Products Administration.This approval marks a significant breakthrough for Beijing Yimiaoshenzhou Medical Techology Co., Ltd. in the field of CAR-T cell therapy for autoimmune diseases. It is the company's first clinical trial approval for a CAR-T cell drug to treat autoimmune diseases, and also its seventh CAR-T cell drug clinical trial approval.
SLE is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects multiple organs. Its pathogenesis involves immune imbalance in the body, leading to the abnormal activation of self-antigen reactive B cells, continuous production of autoantibodies, formation of immune complexes, and systemic inflammation, which damages various tissues and organs. As this disease currently has no cure and requires long-term medication, it is often referred to as the "uncurable cancer."
It is estimated that there are about 1 million SLE patients in China, ranking first in the world in total number and second in incidence.The clinical treatment of SLE relies on the long-term use of immunosuppressants and hormone medications. Although multiple targeted therapies have been marketed globally, their efficacy is limited. Many patients still exhibit high disease activity after receiving standard treatment, and the prolonged use of hormones can cause adverse reactions in multiple organ systems, further exacerbating organ damage.
As of now, no CAR-T drug has been approved globally for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). ZM001, an autologous CAR-T cell injection independently developed by Beijing Yimiaoshenzhou Medical Technology Co., Ltd. using its one-stop gene and cell drug platform, specifically depletes B cells in SLE patients, inhibits the production of autoantibodies in the body, alleviates the deposition of immune complexes in organs, and enables the body to rebuild normal B cells, thereby relieving lupus symptoms and maintaining long-term efficacy. It is a potential treatment for moderate to severe SLE. In previous preclinical studies,ZM001 has demonstrated rapid B-cell depletion with sustained efficacy and an extremely low incidence of severe adverse reactions, offering a new treatment option for a broad patient population upon its market launch.
