Developer of Dendritic Cell Tumor Therapeutic Vaccines

On March 3, 2025, the KSD-201 DC vaccine project for the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma, independently developed by Hengsai Biotech, was officially launched at Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (referred to as "Wuhan Tongji Hospital"). The project is based on Hengsai Biotech's globally leading Eco-DC Vax technology platform and involves collaboration with the expert urology team from Wuhan Tongji Hospital. It aims to provide a novel immunotherapy solution for patients with recurrent and refractory renal cancer. This marks another solid tumor pipeline entering clinical research by Hengsai Biotech after its EBV-related nasopharyngeal carcinoma program. KSD-201 is a cellular drug, an autologous dendritic cell vaccine derived from human monocytes loaded with a broad spectrum of antigens associated with clear cell renal cell carcinoma. By using cytokines to induce the transformation of monocytes into dendritic cells, which are then loaded with a broad spectrum of antigens related to clear cell renal cell carcinoma and further induced to mature, the dendritic cell vaccine is prepared as a therapeutic cancer vaccine. After subcutaneous injection, it activates the patient’s immune function in the body, thereby achieving the effect of treating advanced clear cell renal cell carcinoma.

As one of the "Top Ten Chinese Urological Oncology Institutions," the Department of Urology at Wuhan Tongji Hospital has a multidisciplinary team (MDT) that leads in China in the fields of minimally invasive surgery for kidney cancer and personalized comprehensive treatment. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a malignant tumor originating from the renal tubular epithelium, accounting for approximately 85% of malignant kidney tumors. Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common pathological subtype of RCC. Among all pathological types of RCC, ccRCC has the worst prognosis, the highest potential for recurrence and metastasis, and is not sensitive to radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Advanced ccRCC is an incurable disease, with high tendencies for metastasis and recurrence, difficulty in complete cure, significant individual differences in targeted therapy efficacy and survival benefits, severe adverse reactions, and a propensity for drug resistance. Therefore, ccRCC has always been a challenging problem for many patients, imposing a heavy burden on patients and their families.

At the launch meeting, the urology expert team led by Principal Investigator Professor Shaogang Wang and the clinical team from Hengsai Biotech jointly discussed the key points and challenges of the DC vaccine treatment for ccRCC in the IIT study. Both parties clarified the project goals and personnel assignments, demonstrating high expectations and firm confidence in the project’s future development, laying a solid foundation for the efficient advancement of the subsequent project.
