Recently, an ophthalmic implant company Atia Vision Announce,ItsOmniVu™ Intraocular Lens (IOL) SystemGranted by the FDAInvestigational Device Exemption (IDE) Approval, will officially launch feasibility clinical studies in the U.S.
OmniVu™ is a product withDynamic Focusing AbilityThe modular lens system, designed toRestoring Natural Vision from Near to Far After Cataract Surgery Through Structural Modulation Mechanism, while reducing the optical side effects associated with traditional multifocal and accommodating lenses.
Since the system's first human trial in 2019, it has completed over 75 implants across multiple countries and obtained follow-up data for up to three years. Current research spans international and U.S. multicenter studies, primarily evaluating the system’s effectiveness in restoring dynamic vision post-cataract surgery, as well as its refractive stability and long-term safety.
OmniVu™ Intraocular Lens System is a modular structured intraocular lens with dynamic focusing functionality, designed to achieve its objectives throughSimulating the Natural Accommodation Mechanism of the Human Eye, providing for cataract surgery patients and the presbyopia populationContinuous vision coverage from near to far, while reducing the optical side effects in traditional IOL solutions.
It differs from traditional fixed optical components, instead adopting a"Deformable" Design Structure:The rear part is a fillable, deformable base, and the front part is a fixed lens with high optical quality.
The principle does not rely on additional energy sources or manual control, but ratherWith the help of the eye's own ciliary muscle regulation mechanismWhen the eye focuses, the pressure in the capsular bag is transmitted to the base, triggering the flow of fluid within the lens, thereby guiding the change in the shape of the anterior lens — achieving "true focusing," as if restoring the function of the natural lens.
The system consists of two parts:
Shape-Varying Fluid-Filled Base,Achieve dynamic adjustment of optical focal length through the structural deformation caused by the movement of the ciliary muscle;
Front-Fixed Optical Lens,Customize the embedded base according to the patient's refractive status, providing the system with clear and stable imaging capabilities.
This structure enables OmniVu™ to change its shape driven by the contraction of the ciliary muscle, similar to the natural lens, after being implanted in the eye, thereby adjusting the focal position to achieve dynamic zoom functionality. Unlike traditional accommodative IOLs that rely on capsular bag tension or mechanical displacement (such as anterior-posterior sliding) for focus adjustment, OmniVu™'s accommodative pathwayBased on internal structural deformation, closer to the physiological focusing principle of the human eye.
In terms of morphological design, the OmniVu™ system emphasizes anatomical conformity to the capsular bag. Its base shape is designed to better match the natural geometry of the capsular bag, allowing for full expansion and stable positioning after implantation, filling the capsular bag space, which helps maintain the anatomical integrity and elasticity of the eyeball post-surgery.
From the perspective of optical performance, OmniVu™ adoptsSingle-focus pathway, no energy splitting required, avoiding common issues in imaging such as halos, glare, and reduced contrast often associated with multifocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses.
Early research results show that the systemThe implantation process is highly predictable, with no severe adverse events post-surgery.,The patient achieved stable visual improvement at far, intermediate, and near distances. Data from the subsequent 12-month and 18-month follow-ups further confirmed the system's consistent performance in visual range and refractive predictability.
As of the 24-month results published in 2025:
Distance Vision:1100% of patients achieved uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/20 or better, with an average binocular improvement to 20/16.;
Intermediate-distance vision:Average 20/20;
Near Vision:Average 20/25 (J1), meeting the needs of daily reading functions;
Defocus Range:Binocular coverage exceeds 4.5D, with a visual acuity range above 20/32 spanning 4D;
Refractive Stability: The refractive outcomes at 3 months, 12 months, and 24 months postoperatively were highly consistent.8More than 9% of patients have refractive errors controlled within ±0.5D.;
Contrast Sensitivity: Comparable to monofocal IOL, no degradation in image quality due to the accommodating design was observed;
Side Effect ControlDuring the trial, only one patient experienced mild positive vision abnormalities, and another patient received laser treatment due to posterior capsule opacification, without affecting the base function.
Overall,OmniVu™ System Provides Natural, Continuous Full-Range Vision While Balancing Refractive Predictability, Optical Quality, and Long-Term StabilityAt present, the data shows that it has relatively mature technical implementation capabilities in the category of accommodative IOLs and is advancing feasibility clinical studies in the United States to support subsequent registration applications.
Atia Vision, Inc. was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in Campbell, California, USA.Ophthalmic Implant Company Incubated by Shifamed Platform, committed to the development of the next generation of adjustable intraocular lenses. Its founder, Amr Salahieh, is a serial entrepreneur from Silicon Valley, and his platform has incubated multiple ophthalmology and cardiovascular projects such as iStar, Adona, and Supira. In 2022, Atia Vision announced the completion of a $42 million Series E financing round, following a $20 million Series D round in 2020.
Mariam Maghribi, the company's current CEO, has over 15 years of experience in strategic and operational roles within the medical device industry.
