Our Staff Reporter (Xiaodong Ma) The reporter learned from Tianjin Binhai High-tech Zone that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the High-tech Zone will take biomedicine as one of its leading industries, promoting the integration of technological innovation and industrial innovation, with an average annual growth rate of output value reaching 16%. In the comprehensive competitiveness ranking of national biomedicine industrial parks, it has ranked among the top for three consecutive years.
During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the High-Tech Zone has established an innovation matrix comprising national key laboratories, Haihe Laboratories, and municipal key laboratories. It facilitated the establishment of the National Modern Traditional Chinese Medicine Innovation Center and the completion of the Cell Ecology Haihe Laboratory, which includes a cutting-edge technology center, incubators, and various functional platforms. To date, the High-Tech Zone hosts nearly 20 national-level innovation platforms and over 60 municipal-level innovation platforms in the biomedicine sector. Additionally, it has received nearly 30 national and Tianjin Science and Technology Awards in the biomedicine field.
Located in the High-Tech Zone, Juventas is a leading company in China in the field of innovative drug research and development and industrialization for immunocyte therapy. Its first product, "Yuan Ruida," has filled the gap in the treatment of adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In November last year, its new indication for treating lymphoma was approved, making it currently the only CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell) product in China that covers two major hematological cancer indications: leukemia and lymphoma.
"The rapid development of the company is inseparable from the comprehensive and systematic support provided by the innovative environment of the High-Tech Zone. For example, focusing on the entire life cycle of enterprises, the High-Tech Zone offers full-range innovative services from pre-consultation, mid-process coordination to post-service, enabling us to successfully obtain the first 'Drug Production License' in the cell therapy field in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Additionally, the industrial guidance fund of the High-Tech Zone has participated in multiple rounds of the company's financing. Innovative measures in talent introduction, evaluation, and incentives have helped us attract top scientific research talents from home and abroad," said Zhu Ruihe, Director of Government Affairs at Juventas. He added that the company will continue to deepen its efforts in expanding indications, increasing production capacity, and advancing global layout.
At present, the High-Tech Zone has gathered more than 100 upstream and downstream enterprises in the cell and gene therapy industry chain, forming a complete industrial chain that includes cell extraction and preparation, cell storage, cold chain logistics, innovative research and development, pilot testing, evaluation and approval, and clinical application. In addition, the zone is making progress in multiple areas such as innovative drugs, medical devices, and pharmaceutical services, with steadily increasing industrial strength.
Tianjin Hengyu Medical Technology Co., Ltd., which focuses on intelligent diagnosis and treatment within blood vessels, has achieved phased results in intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, and the integration of both since its establishment in the High-Tech Zone. Zhao Shiyong, the company's general manager, stated that over eight years, the company completed a "three-step leap" from core components to complete systems and then to multimodal fusion. It is now advancing toward the goal of "tri-modal single imaging" with intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, and near-infrared spectroscopy.
Looking ahead to the "15th Five-Year Plan," Liu Xianming, Deputy Director of the High-Tech Zone Management Committee, stated that by firmly targeting the goal of becoming "a leading national hub for biotechnology and bio-manufacturing industries," the High-Tech Zone will promote the coordinated development of the Huayuan Science and Innovation Pilot Zone and the Binhai Longhu Advanced Manufacturing Base. It aims to strengthen two key innovation and industry hubs: the "Cell Valley" with distinctive features in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the "China Brain-Machine Valley." The zone will deepen its focus on five core industry sectors—innovative drugs, medical devices, cell therapy, brain-computer interfaces, and pharmaceutical services—and proactively lay out plans for multiple promising industries such as bio-manufacturing, healthcare, and broader health sectors. Efforts will be made to build the High-Tech Zone's biomedicine industry into a landmark industrial cluster with nationwide influence and global competitiveness.
