Recently, Medtronic announced a major expansion plan, which involves adding 85 new jobs at its existing facility in Galway, Ireland, and simultaneously establishing a European software development center. This center will focus on software technology research and development related to cardiac implantable devices, aiming to help patients worldwide receive higher-quality continuous medical care.

It is reported that the core of this Galway expansion focuses on the construction of a European software development center, precisely targeting the digital upgrade needs of cardiac implantable devices. The positions will concentrate on high-end fields such as software development, medical technical support, and data security. The scale of these positions will continue to expand over the next three years.
The European Software Development Center will focus on "improving global patient diagnosis and treatment outcomes" as its core objective, with an emphasis on cloud platform construction and the development of new interconnected software. This will enable real-time communication between cardiac implantable devices, the patient data they collect, and clinicians.

Through this "Continuously Connected Healthcare" model, medical staff can more accurately monitor various heart conditions, while patients can gain greater confidence in life with the support of real-time medical monitoring, significantly improving clinical diagnosis and treatment efficiency.
Medtronic stated that this expansion builds on its existing industrial foundation in western Ireland, with the local pool of highly educated professionals providing critical support for the project's implementation. The establishment of this center is not only a core initiative for the company to deepen the research and development of new products but also aligns closely with the national strategy promoted by the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) of Ireland to advance the digital healthcare industry.
The Industrial Development Agency of Ireland pointed out that the brand-new R&D center for patient care systems will further strengthen the deep integration of Ireland's technology industry and the medical technology sector. It will help the country leverage its technical advantages to continuously attract international investment, create high-quality jobs, and consolidate its competitiveness in the global digital healthcare field.
It is also reported that Medtronic will host a special event in Galway next week to provide a detailed interpretation of the long-term development benefits brought by this industrial integration. Currently, the recruitment for 85 new positions has officially started, covering various fields such as software development, medical technical support, and project management.
This Galway expansion is not accidental but a natural continuation of Medtronic's over four-decade commitment to Ireland, gradually establishing it as a global strategic hub. Medtronic’s presence in Ireland began in 1981 and, after more than 40 years of dedication, has evolved from a single manufacturing plant into a core hub for its global headquarters, R&D, and production. By 2025, Medtronic will have established five major sites across three locations in Ireland: Galway, Dublin, and Athlone, covering the entire chain of R&D, manufacturing, sales, and customer service.
Going back to 1981, Medtronic officially entered the Irish market, initially focusing on the production of basic medical devices. It established a European production base in Ireland by leveraging the local low costs and tax advantages. In 2014, Medtronic announced a $42.9 billion acquisition of Irish company Covidien, and completed the merger in 2015, relocating its global legal headquarters to Dublin, Ireland. This became the largest tax inversion merger in the history of the medical industry.
As the core of Medtronic's layout in Ireland, Galway boasts two major bases, Parkmore and Mervue, with over 2,000 employees. Among them, the Parkmore base serves as the global center of excellence for cardiac and vascular businesses, undertaking the R&D, production, and global operations of cardiac devices.
In 2015, Medtronic built a new factory in Galway to produce the IN.PACT Admiral drug-coated balloon (DCB) for the treatment of peripheral artery disease, becoming Medtronic's only global DCB production base. Relying on the local technical expertise in the field of drug-device combination products, it supports the supply for the global market.
Notably, Medtronic recently announced plans to cease operations at its Santa Rosa, California plant, stating that the related business will primarily be relocated to Santa Ana, Minnesota in the U.S. and Galway, Ireland.
Beyond production capacity and headquarters layout, Medtronic is deeply advancing the integration of industry, academia, and research in Ireland. In 2023, Medtronic signed a five-year cooperation agreement with the University of Galway, investing 5 million euros to jointly establish a medical device prototyping center. In February this year, the prototyping center developed through this collaboration was officially launched, further strengthening Galway's position as a core hub for medical technology innovation in Europe, while continuously providing Medtronic with R&D talent and technological achievements.
Behind Ireland's expansion plan lies Medtronic's unshakable dominance in the cardiac device field, and its digital strategy is the key to solidifying its leading position and guiding the industry.
Cardiac devices, as Medtronic's core growth engine, showed the most impressive performance with cardiovascular business growing by 13.8% year-over-year in the latest Q3 data of fiscal year 2026. Products such as pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, and cardiac ablation systems remain in the top tier globally. Supported by both traditional device barriers and digital ecosystem strategies, core products continue to iterate, leading the industry direction through digital transformation.
In terms of cardiovascular business, Medtronic is the global leader in heart rhythm management devices. Its core products include leadless pacemakers (Micra), cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD), among others. Micra, as the world's smallest leadless pacemaker, has a volume that is only 1/10 of traditional products. Its design, which eliminates the need for lead implantation, significantly reduces the risk of infection and has gained widespread adoption globally.
At the same time, its cardiac ablation solutions are regarded as the "aircraft carrier" in the electrophysiology field. Core products such as the Affera 3D electrophysiology navigation and pulsed radiofrequency ablation system, and the Sphere-9 pulsed radiofrequency ablation catheter, can complete the entire process of cardiac lesion mapping and ablation therapy. In the third quarter of the 2026 fiscal year, revenue from this business surged by 80%, with the growth rate in the U.S. market reaching an impressive 137%, making it one of the fastest-growing segments of the company.
In the field of structural heart disease, products such as the Evolut FX+ Transcatheter Aortic Valve System and the zero-metal artificial heart valve Avalus comprehensively cover scenarios including aortic valve replacement and heart failure treatment.
Under the digital transformation driven by device interconnectivity, data-driven approaches, and AI empowerment, Medtronic's Galway European Software Center will serve as a key platform. Through three major dimensions—device intelligence, cloud platform construction, and AI clinical applications—it will achieve real-time data collection, secure analysis, and risk warnings, enhancing the precision of diagnosis and treatment.

Currently, the competition in the global medical device industry has shifted from单一产品比拼 (single-product competition) to ecosystem competition, with digital capabilities, global layout, and industry-academia-research collaboration becoming core competencies. Medtronic's strategic expansion in Ireland is not only a crucial step in its deep cultivation of the global market and consolidation of its leading position in cardiac devices but also a vivid practice of the integration of digitalization and globalization in the industry.
So, how will Medtronic further strengthen its leading advantage in the field of cardiac digital diagnosis and treatment as the Galway European Software Center is established in the future, providing more efficient, precise, and accessible medical services to patients worldwide? We will continue to follow up.
