Novartis to Permanently Close Campus Point Drive R&D Site in San Diego by End of 2025

Recently, NovartisIt was clearly stated in an email to the media that a phased withdrawal from the Technology Research and Development (TRD) site located on Campus Point Drive would take place, andExpected to finally complete the closure by the end of 2025.。

Novartis confirmed that the closure of the TRD site is part of its strategic plan to "develop a global development organization to drive sustainable, leading R&D performance and bring meaningful medicines to patients more quickly."

The plant is part of a large-scale restructuring of the company's drug development division. In the first phase of layoffs, the company cut 29 jobs at Campus Point Drive. Novartis stated,SantiagoThe closure of the factory will eventually reduce about 100 jobs. With the closure of this factory, Novartis will "consolidate the (R&D) capabilities of its existing plants in the United States."

Although the research center on Campus Point Drive is about to close, a spokesperson for Novartis stated that Novartis will continue to maintain a team of approximately 580 employees in San Diego.The research areas cover multiple key fields, including oncology, neuroscience, and immunology.

In April this year, Novartis already indicated that it would consider reducing its global development team by cutting 680 jobs, including 440 employees in Switzerland. The company underwent a global restructuring in 2022, which involved cutting up to 8,000 jobs.

Novartis' biomedical research institute in San Diego has 5,511 full-time employees. By the end of 2023, the company had more than 76,000 full-time employees.

In recent months, several life science companies have adjusted their presence in San Diego. Takeda Pharmaceutical announced in May that it would close its research center in San Diego, and DNA sequencing company Pacific Biosciences also declared in April that it would shut down its San Diego office.
