GSK's Meningitis B Vaccine Launches in South Korea First

Despite the rising incidence of meningococcal B in South Korea since 2010, there is still no preventive vaccine available to date, leading to a significant unmet medical need.At a vaccine launch event in Seoul on Tuesday, Professor Hyeon-mi Kang from the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital emphasized the prevalence of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) caused by serogroup B and the benefits of the Bexsero vaccine.

Bexsero is the world's first MenB vaccine, with FDA approval for adolescents aged 12-25. Since its initial approval in Europe in 2013, Bexsero has been approved in 52 countries and has demonstrated its effectiveness in preventing meningococcal group B infections for over 10 years. It is recommended for vaccination in 35 countries and has been incorporated into the national immunization programs of 14 countries, including the UK, the US, the Czech Republic, and France.

In 2023, Brazil exited the list of the top 20 countries with the most unvaccinated children, whereas in 2021, it ranked 7th among the countries with the most unvaccinated children.

In a new report on global vaccination levels released Monday by the World Health Organization and UNICEF, the country has made progress in its efforts to increase vaccine coverage rates for the National Immunization Program (PNI), which have been declining since 2016. This decline worsened between 2019 and 2022, when then-President Jair Bolsonaro and his allies spread misinformation about vaccines, increasing vaccine distrust.

The increase in vaccination coverage in Brazil contrasts sharply with the global situation, where immunization rates have stagnated. According to WHO-UNICEF documents, the number of children in Brazil who did not receive any doses of the DTP vaccine (which prevents diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis) decreased from 418,000 in 2022 to 103,000 in 2023. Meanwhile, globally, the number of children who did not receive any doses of this vaccine increased from 13.9 million in 2022 to 14.5 million in 2023.

However, the budget for vaccine safety monitoring at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention remains stagnant, at approximately $20 million per year. Although these resources are being used efficiently, this level of underfunding adversely affects the speed and integrity of science.
