丨Lilly's Tirzepatide Approved for Weight Loss Indication in China

On July 19, the reporter learned from the National Medical Products Administration that Eli Lilly's tirzepatide injection for long-term weight management has been approved. This is currently the first and only approved glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)/glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, and also the first innovative drug in the obesity treatment field approved in China by Eli Lilly.

Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk have long been known as the "GLP-1 Duo," with the latter's "weight-loss wonder drug" semaglutide already approved for marketing in China. Now, with tirzepatide entering the weight-loss market in China, the two giants are set to face off head-to-head domestically.

According to Lilly, the newly approved GIP/GLP-1 receptor dual agonist tirzepatide (brand name: Mounjaro) will be used for long-term weight management in China. On May 21 this year, tirzepatide was approved in China for the indication of type 2 diabetes.

Although both semaglutide and tirzepatide belong to GLP-1 drugs, the difference is that semaglutide is a GLP-1 single-target drug, while tirzepatide is a GIP/GLP-1 dual-target drug.
