The healthcare industry is responsible for generating nearly one-third of the world's data, but much of this information is not easily accessible. As patient medical records, images, scans, and insurance records are stored in different file formats and systems, it can be challenging for doctors and researchers to sort through this mountain of information, especially on a larger scale. According to one report, up to 97% of the data generated by hospitals goes unused. GE Healthcare, which provides solutions in medical imaging, ultrasound, patient care, and pharmaceutical diagnostics, believes generative artificial intelligence can help.

GE Healthcare's Global Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Taha Kass-Hout, told CNBC in an interview, "The tools we hope to build will aim to help hospitals and clinicians make the most of the data they have."He is the first Chief Technology Officer of GE Healthcare after its spin-off, and also a former executive of Amazon.

Kass-Hout further stated that AWS might help GE Healthcare accelerate the development and deployment of its web-based medical imaging applications, which, for example, would make it easier for radiologists and other physicians to analyze data.

The model of this cooperation is that GE Healthcare provides its own AI tools, but its collaboration with AWS will offer the company the technical infrastructure needed to quickly build large-scale generative AI models and tools. GE Healthcare will use AWS’s solutions, such asAmazon BedrockAndAmazon SageMaker。

"Training these models requires a significant amount of computing power, a vast amount of data, and a great deal of expertise, and this is where we are focusing our collaboration," said Matt Wood, Vice President of Artificial Intelligence at AWS, in an interview with CNBC.

In addition to building a broader range of healthcare applications, Kass-Hout also stated that GE Healthcare is exploring how to use generative AI to streamline the company's internal productivity.He said that one of the company's initial priorities was to use a tool called Amazon Q Developer to generate real-time code suggestions for software developers, which should help them work more efficiently.

Kass-Hout stated that GE Healthcare maintains strict testing and standards before bringing products to market, and the same applies to its development of generative AI applications. He added that GE Healthcare will not train models using customer data.

The company's new models and applications will initially be available to GE Healthcare employees and customers, but it plans to use them more widely in the future.

Notably, in recent years, GE Healthcare has been continuously strengthening its work in AI, including its long-term collaboration with AWS.
