Intelligent Finance and Economics News learned that Eli Lilly and Company (LLY.US) announced a partnership with Egyptian pharmaceutical company EVA Pharma on Wednesday. By 2030, they will provide the JAK inhibitor Olumiant (baricitinib) to people in 49 low- and middle-income countries in Africa. Olumiant is an approved drug for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, alopecia areata, atopic dermatitis, and COVID-19.
After the transaction is completed, EVA Pharma will manufacture and supply baricitinib in 49 low- and middle-income countries in Africa, serving approximately 20,000 people. The baricitinib produced locally by the company will begin sales in 2026. Baricitinib is a drug co-developed by Eli Lilly and Company and Incyte (INCY.US), applicable to diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and atopic dermatitis.
The agreement was identified as a voluntary licensing agreement, part of Eli Lilly's "30x30" initiative, which aims to expand healthcare access to 30 million people living in resource-limited areas by 2030. In 2022, the two companies collaborated to extend insulin access to at least one million patients living in low-income countries, primarily in Africa.
