The Galien Foundation recently announced the nominations for its annual "Best Medical Technology" Prix Galien USA Award.
The Galien Foundation annually honors global innovators in the categories of digital health, medical technology, and start-ups. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Galien Foundation and Business France. Below are the nominations for the most innovative medical devices of 2024.
However, among the 29 nominated devices, 22 were repeat nominations from previous years. Medtronic and Edwards Lifesciences each had three products nominated.

A Brief Overview of This Year's Newly Listed Medical Devices:
1-Butterfly Network: Butterfly iQ3 Handheld Ultrasound System

Butterfly iQ3
Butterfly iQ3 is an ergonomic handheld point-of-care ultrasound system that doubles the data processing speed compared to previous generations. It optimizes image resolution, sensitivity, and penetration while supporting faster 3D capabilities, enabling novel automated image capture modes called iQ Slice and iQ Fan. The company launched the next-generation system on September 4, 2024.
2-Edwards Lifesciences: Edwards Evoque Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Replacement System

*Evoque Tricuspid Valve
Edwards Lifesciences' Evoque is a tricuspid valve replacement system approved by the FDA for treating tricuspid regurgitation. It features a nitinol self-expanding frame, an annular inner skirt, and tissue leaflets made from bovine pericardial tissue. The company received FDA approval in February 2024.
3-Medtronic: Inceptiv Spinal Cord Stimulation System

*Inceptiv SCS
Medtronic's Inceptiv is a closed-loop spinal cord stimulator designed to treat chronic pain. It is one of Medtronic's first devices to offer closed-loop functionality, capable of sensing bio-signals along the spinal cord and automatically adjusting stimulation in real time.
Inceptiv has dedicated circuits and proprietary algorithms that can detect Evoked Compound Action Potentials (ECAP), which is a direct measurement of the degree of neural tissue activation in the spinal cord. The FDA approved the device in April 2024.
4-Medtronic: MiniMed 780G Automated Insulin Delivery System

*Medtronic MiniMed 780G System
MiniMed 780G is an automated insulin delivery system featuring meal detection technology, an insulin pump, continuous glucose monitoring, an infusion set, and compatibility with Apple Watch and other mobile applications. If the user's carbohydrate count is inaccurate, the meal detection technology automatically provides a correction dose. The system’s automatic correction helps prevent high and low blood sugar by continuously adjusting insulin throughout the day. The infusion set can be worn for up to 7 days, with a flexible glucose target as low as 100 mg/dL.
5-Medtronic: Symplicity Spyral RDN System

*Symplicity Spyral RDN Catheter
Medtronic's Symplicity Spyral is a multi-electrode renal denervation catheter. Its non-occlusive design allows for continuous blood flow, naturally protecting the vessel wall during the procedure. The multi-electrode spiral design simultaneously covers all four quadrants for circumferential ablation. It delivers controlled and targeted radiofrequency energy to the renal nerves to safely disrupt overactive sympathetic nerve signals between the kidneys and the brain, reducing blood pressure. The FDA approved Symplicity Spyral in November 2023.
6-RefleXion Medical: RefleXion X1 System

*RefleXion X1 System
Scintix is a theranostic approach for external beam radiation therapy, utilizing emissions from radiotracers to treat cancer based on the individual molecular profile of each tumor on the day of treatment. According to RefleXion, the X1 platform can treat multiple tumors in the lung or bone with conformal dose delivery within a single plan. If the tumor moves within the body, the conformal dose moves as well, as Scintix technology tracks and adjusts the dose based on both periodic and non-periodic tumor motion.
7-Smith+Nephew: Cori Surgical System

*Cori System
Smith+Nephew's Cori surgical system is a handheld robotic platform used for total knee and partial knee surgeries, knee revision surgeries, and total hip surgeries. It features a virtual planning system that allows surgeons to familiarize themselves with creating surgical plans on the CORI surgical system. Personalized planning is also supported by artificial intelligence, enabling surgeons to set preferences for their initial implant positioning based on the patient’s deformity. The company recently launched the new CorioGraph preoperative planning and modeling service in June.
