U.S. pharmaceutical giantEli LillyEli Lilly and Company (LLY.US) plans to invest approximately £279 million (about $364 million) in a new investment initiative, primarily to support the collaborative development of multiple biotech companies within the UK. Additionally, the company will research the impact of its blockbuster drugs for treating diabetes and obesity on the utilization of healthcare resources and employment conditions in the UK.

According to an email statement on Monday, the latest investment by the Indianapolis-based U.S. pharmaceutical company includes £204 million to establish the Lilly Gateway Labs in the UK, enabling some early-stage biotech companies in the UK to access Lilly's expertise, laboratory space, and potential financial investment.

Other investments in the UK include a 5-year real-world study on "tirzepatide," which involves Mounjaro, a drug used in the U.S. market to treat diabetes and obesity, as well as Zepbound for weight loss purposes. The impact on UK healthcare resources also includes research into the promotion of anti-obesity drugs in the UK. Tirzepatide is the core component of Eli Lilly's weight loss medication.

Although the UK government has long been committed to positioning the country as a "life sciences superpower," it has struggled to attract and retain investment over the long term. Dave Ricks, CEO of Eli Lilly and Company, introduced this initiative at a conference in London, where international business leaders such as Eli Lilly and Company pledged to increase their investment in the UK, while the UK government committed to relaxing regulatory guidelines for UK businesses.

According to the statement, in addition to studying the scale of patients' use of healthcare services, Eli Lilly's real-world research on tirzepatide in the UK will also monitor its impact on employment status and sick leave conditions. Eli Lilly and Company stated that it would collaborate with the UK government to explore other significant investment opportunities, such as building a large manufacturing base for Eli Lilly and cooperating with the country’s venture capital funds. Since the new Labour government took office in the UK, it has been attempting to attract more foreign investments.

A recent study found that obese patients using Eli Lilly and Company's drug Mounjaro (the active ingredient is Tirzepatide), which is designed for both weight loss and diabetes treatment, outperformed the strongest competitor of Eli Lilly in the weight loss drug market.Novo NordiskThe patient group for Ozempic (active ingredient: Semaglutide), a drug introduced by the company (NVO.US) that serves both weight loss and diabetes treatment, demonstrated significantly greater weight loss effects.

The aforementioned research is of great significance to the two pharmaceutical giants, "Eli Lilly and Company" and "Novo Nordisk," which have formed a monopolistic position in the weight-loss drug market. It may prompt more obese patients or those attempting to lose weight through injections to turn to Eli Lilly rather than Novo Nordisk, potentially providing a boost to Eli Lilly's stock price.

From a longer timeline perspective, at six months of use, patients using Eli Lilly's Mounjaro achieved an average weight loss of up to 10.1%, while those using Novo Nordisk's Ozempic only achieved an average weight loss of 5.8%. After 12 months, users of Mounjaro experienced an average weight reduction of 15.3%, compared to 8.3% for Ozempic users. The study also indicated that the risk of gastrointestinal adverse events was generally similar for both weight-loss injectable drugs.
