Recently, according to the clinicaltrials.gov website, Novartis has terminated (TERMINATED) the Phase II clinical trial (NCT05497284) of SMURF1 inhibitor LTP001 for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), due to "Sponsor Decision."In fact, Novartis halted patient recruitment for the trial earlier this year, even though the trial had only reached half of its recruitment goal. Afterward, it continued to track the 46 patients who had already joined the study. However, Novartis has now completely decided to terminate the trial, and Fierce Biotech has confirmed this action with a Novartis spokesperson."Novartis has decided to terminate the early Phase II study of LTP001." The spokesperson stated, "We will continue to advance the development of the SMURF1 inhibitor for the primary indication of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and will continue to evaluate its potential in IPF in the future. To date, no concerning or new safety signals have been identified."In 2021 and 2023, Novartis successively initiated two Phase II studies (NCT05135000 and NCT05764265) for LTP001 in the treatment of PAH. However, these two studies were also terminated earlier this year, again due to "the sponsor's decision." In 2022, a Phase II study for the treatment of IPF was initiated, which is the study that has been terminated this time.SMURF1 (SMAD ubiquitination regulatory factor 1) is a HECT-type E3 ubiquitin ligase involved in various physiological processes. According to the PharmaCube database, there are only three drugs targeting SMURF1 currently under research globally, with Novartis' LTP001 being the most advanced in progress.Copyright © 2024 PHARMCUBE.
