On October 21, 2024, Rigerna announced the completion of an angel+ round of financing exceeding RMB 100 million. This round was co-led by Shanghai Science Investment Co., Ltd. and Qihang Investment, with follow-on investments from Xincheng Fund, JSG United Runpu, Yuanxi Haihe, and others. Existing shareholder Sanyi Innovation Investment also increased its investment. The proceeds from this round will primarily be used for the clinical research of the company’s first siRNA drug, RG002C0106, the advancement of multiple preclinical pipelines, and the rapid development of non-liver tissue in vivo delivery technology and corresponding pipelines.
Rigerna was founded in 2022 and led by Dr. Huang Yuanyu, who has over 16 years of expertise in the nucleic acid pharmaceutical field. Dr. Huang previously worked for many years at a leading small nucleic acid pharmaceutical company, where he led the establishment of several small nucleic acid pharmaceutical technology platforms, advanced the development of various pipelines, and successfully brought them to clinical stages. He is one of the earliest pioneers globally in nucleic acid drug research and one of the trailblazers in China’s small nucleic acid pharmaceuticals sector. Dr. Huang has been recognized as a National-level Young Talent, a top 2% global scientist for five consecutive years, a Beijing Science and Technology Nova, a Gusu Leading Talent, a Suzhou Industrial Park Leading Talent, and a "New Gateway" Leading Talent of Daxing District, Beijing. He has also served as a special guest on CCTV's "Innovation Road" program. Dr. Huang has published over 120 papers in prestigious journals such as Nat Rev Bioeng, Sci Adv, Nat Commun, STTT, and Adv Mater, and filed more than 40 patents, including over 10 PCT patents. Shortly after its founding, Rigerna quickly gained the favor and support of professional pharmaceutical investment institutions with long-term interests in the small nucleic acid space, namely Sanyi Innovation Investment and Haizhi Capital.
Under the leadership of Dr. Huang Yuanyu, Rigerna has rapidly assembled a team with over 10 years of industry experience, possessing extensive expertise and deep understanding in the research and development of small nucleic acid drugs. Their professional backgrounds and work experiences cover the entire process of small nucleic acid drug development. At the same time, Rigerna has quickly established a small nucleic acid drug development platform with global independent intellectual property rights — featuring design and screening technology RIHOST®, chemical modification technology RICMO®, and in vivo delivery technology LICOD®. Based on this, the company is efficiently advancing the development of innovative drug candidates targeting intrahepatic and extrahepatic indications with global rights. To date, a series of key milestone achievements have been made, including: (i) establishing the second-generation GalNAc conjugate delivery technology globally; (ii) preclinical studies of its leading pipeline RG002C0106 have demonstrated excellent efficacy and safety, with clinical trials approved in both China and Australia. Clinical enrollment has already commenced, and it has the potential to become the world’s first-in-class small nucleic acid drug; (iii) developing multiple non-liver tissue delivery technologies based on several exclusive strategies, among which the renal tissue delivery technology is the first and only one globally to complete non-human primate trial validation, achieving an inhibition efficiency of over 70%.
